Feeling batty this #Halloween? Every summer, Bracken Cave near New Braunfels, Texas, becomes home to an estimated 20 million Mexican free-tailed bats that have traveled as far as 1,000 miles to roost.Each evening during their stay from March to October, the bats emerge from the cave to consume several tons of insects, with the bat cloud spanning a distance 30 miles wide and 20 miles long.Such a fantastic visual spectacle was irresistible to Andreas Feininger, a photographer with a proclivity for seeking out seemingly unbelievable things.This photograph by Feininger in NOMAs permanent collection depicts a dense formation of bats with an eye for the stark graphic quality of the gathering. Nership With The Jewish Museum New York And New Gallery For Judaica At The Mfah Will Establish Ongoing Presence For Jewish Ceremonial Art In Houston

Houston, TX and New York, NY June 8, 2022 The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and The Jewish Museum, New York today announced a partnership to establish an ongoing presence for Judaica at the MFAH: In July 2022, the MFAH will open the exhibition Beauty and Ritual: Judaica from The Jewish Museum, New York, the first step in the ongoing partnership, which will bring exceptional objects from the Jewish Museum to Houston over a period of years. In early 2023, ongoing presentations centered on objects on loan from the Jewish Museum will begin when The Albert and Ethel Herzstein Gallery for Judaica opens at the MFAH. The Herzstein Gallery is a centerpiece of the World Faiths Initiative at the MFAH, a program of interfaith projects based on the museums collections and exhibitions and funded by the Lilly Endowment Inc.

The exhibition Beauty and Ritual: Judaica from The Jewish Museum, New York will be the first of a series of presentations at the MFAH from the collection of The Jewish Museum, New York. On view July 10 to September 18, 2022, the exhibition will feature over 140 objects from the Jewish Museums world-renowned collection, examining Jewish ceremonial objects from antiquity to the present and exploring their artistic, ritualistic, and cultural significance.

Paris, and the year is 1910 four years from now Europe will shatter, but painting is already in pieces. Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso arent even 30 yet, and in their studios in Montmartre they are making paintings that look like nothing that came before. Flat paintings. Fractured paintings. Paintings that boil down human experience to a stew of signs and symbols, and set the 20th century on the path to abstraction.

From their hero Paul Cézanne, theyd learned to break down and reassemble multiple perspectives. Scrutinizing central African sculpture in Pariss colonial ethnology museum, theyd learned to clarify bodies into pure geometry. Crossing those two wires they jolt the history of western art, and spark a whole new kind of image that, for the first time in 500 years, is done with simulating real life. Not satisfied with revolutionizing painting, they then go on to forge an even more radical form: collage, which contaminated the realm of fine art with detritus from newspapers and the shops.

Braques reduction of painterly space from three dimensions to two was a watershed and even so, he was looking at how trompe loeil declined to simulate space via one-point perspective. Fake frames made it clear: The pictures were just pictures. Flat wood panels were painted to appear like flat wood panels. The Irish-American artist William Michael Harnett, in an 1888 trompe loeil panel, depicts a violin and its bow, some sheet music, and even a horseshoe hanging from nails hammered into a wooden door, each stain and grain neurotically detailed.

LONDON For Hans-Peter Wipplinger, the director of Viennas Leopold Museum, the last few weeks have been challenging. As climate protesters across Europe stepped up their attacks against art, Wipplinger took measures to protect his storied collection, which includes famous paintings by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. Bags were banned coats, too. The museum hired extra guards to patrol its five floors.

It didnt work. Last week, members of a group called Last Generation walked into the museum and threw black liquid at one of Klimts major works, Death and Life. A protester had sneaked the liquid into the museum in a hot water bottle strapped to his chest, Wipplinger said.

The Klimt, protected by glass, was unharmed. But Wipplinger said his security team could only have stopped the attack by subjecting visitors to invasive body searches, like at the airport. He didnt want to even consider that prospect, he added.

If we start such procedures, the whole idea of what a museum is dies, Wipplinger said. A museum is a place that should always be open to the public, adding: We cant stop being that.

Digital Representation Of Collections

Beginning in 2013, the Met organized the Digital Media Department for the purpose of increasing access of the museums collections and resources using digital media and expanded website services. The first Chief Digital Officer Sree Sreenivasan from 2013 departed in 2016 and was replaced by Loic Tallon at the time that the department became known by its simplified designation as the Digital Department. At the start of 2017, the department began its Open Access initiative summarized on the Mets website titled Digital Underground stating: Its been six months since The Met launched its Open Access initiative, which made available all 375,000+ images of public-domain works in The Met collection under Creative Commons Zero . During what is just the dawn of this new initiative, the responses so far have been incredible. At that time, more than 375,000 photographic images from the museums archival collection were released for public domain reproduction and use both by the general public and by large public access websites such as those available at Google BigQuery.

In May 2022, the Met and the World Monuments Fund announced a collaboration of digital work for the 2024 reopening of the African, ancient American, and Oceanic art galleries. The digital project aims to bolster the understanding of several historic sites in sub-Saharan Africa, in particular sites that have been minimally explored by Western museums.
