Art History At The Met

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York Reopens to the General Public

A few of my best-loved things to see at the Met include the American Wing, which features artwork from some of Americas most popular artists like Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper the Egyptian Temple Gallery, which contains some lovely ancient carvings and statuary and the Costume Institute, which showcases a few of the most sophisticated and luxurious costumes from history. No matter what your interests Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the best attractions in NYC for visitors interested in the arts.

The Museum Initially Changed Its Pay

The Metropolitan Museum of Art will increase its general admission fee starting this Friday from $25 to $30. The museum had a long-standing pay-what-you-wish policy until March 2018, which was suspended with the aim to offset the number of visitors who opted to forego the full suggested donation amid a decrease in visitors and as the museum faced a crippling deficit estimated at around $40m.

In a previous interview with The Art Newspaper, Daniel H. Weiss, the president and chief executive of the museumwho recently announced he will step down from the role next yearsaid the pay-as-you-wish policy had basically failed and could not sustain the museum, which required significant resources in order to function. The updated policy was implemented to slightly raise the revenue brought through ticket sales by around 3% or $49m annually.

More than 7 million people come to the Met each year, but not enough visitors paid the suggested fee, something that Weiss said included various factors such as the changing demographics of visitors, with younger and more diverse audiences coming to the Met, as well as the visibility around lawsuits filed against the museum which claimed the suggested or recommended donation was misleading and confusing.

History Of The Metropolitan Museum Of Art

19th Century Origins

The seeds for a major New York art museum were actually planted in Paris in 1866 during a Fourth of July luncheon at which John Jay, a prominent lawyer and the grandson of the first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, commented in a post-meal speech that it was “time for the American people to lay the foundations of a National Institution and Gallery of Art.” Among the Americans gathered that day were a number of New Yorkers who responded to Jay’s call and that very night agreed to create such an institution in their native city.

Several were members of the Union League Club, which had been created to support Abraham Lincoln but was also involved in nonpolitical matters. The club referred the idea of a museum to its art committee, which deliberated for three years before recommending the establishment of a metropolitan art museum, provided that it was “free alike from bungling government officials and from the control of a single individual.” A plan for the museum was then developed and legal documents drawn up, so that on January 31, 1870, the Board of Trustees for the new museum was selected, their numbers including merchants, lawyers, city officials, as well as a few practicing artists. On April 13, 1870, the New York Legislature agreed to incorporate the Met, mandating that it serve an educational mission to the public.

The Met Changed My Life

Despite starting Museum Hack, Ive never taken an art history class.

Theres a semi-secret 3rd floor attached to this room!

Ive never really been someone who regularly goes to museums.

And yet now, I went to this place in Central Park. I had this experience and it infinitely changed my life.

This sculpture was made around the year 3000 B.C. THAT IS INSANE.

So I think about that a lot.

We staged a dance party in this room once.

What To See At The Met

When the Met was founded 151 years ago, it was intended not as an emblem of empire like the British Museum or of revolution like the Musée du Louvre. Instead, it was designed to educate and edify a teaming city of immigrants, and underscore the uniquely global culture of 19th century New York City. Whether that stated purpose has been meet by modern, post-colonial standards is up for debate in recent years a conversation many museums are reckoning with worldwide.

Still, the Met is an ever-evolving classic. As the 2021 PBS documentary Inside the Met notes, what should have been a blockbuster birthday year for the museum’s 150th anniversary turned into a reassessment of its approach to both inclusivity and accessibility, including the Met’s use of digital space. Newly reopened as of March 13, 2021, the Met is showcasing its global collection in new contexts and inviting fresh discussion about some of its oldest works from contemporary artists.

There’s certainly too much to list in its entirety, but here are some of the best highlights:

Digital Representation Of Collections

Beginning in 2013, the Met organized the Digital Media Department for the purpose of increasing access of the museum’s collections and resources using digital media and expanded website services. The first Chief Digital Officer Sree Sreenivasan from 2013 departed in 2016 and was replaced by Loic Tallon at the time that the department became known by its simplified designation as the Digital Department. At the start of 2017, the department began its Open Access initiative summarized on the Met’s website titled “Digital Underground” stating: “It’s been six months since The Met launched its Open Access initiative, which made available all 375,000+ images of public-domain works in The Met collection under Creative Commons Zero . During what is just the dawn of this new initiative, the responses so far have been incredible.” At that time, more than 375,000 photographic images from the museum’s archival collection were released for public domain reproduction and use both by the general public and by large public access websites such as those available at Google BigQuery.

Crossroads: Empires And Emporia

The Met presents a world of crossroadsbetween places, eras, and cultures. Empires and Emporia represents the sustained contact linking Asia, Europe, and America for more than four centuries, beginning with the arrival of Portuguese merchants in Japan and China in the 16th century, the conquest of the Philippines by Spain, and the establishment of a transpacific trade route between Manila and Acapulco.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York City, colloquially “the Met“, is the largest art museum in the Western Hemisphere. Its permanent collection contains over two million works, divided among 17 curatorial departments. The main building at 1000 Fifth Avenue, along the Museum Mile on the eastern edge of Central Park on Manhattan‘s Upper East Side, is by area one of the world’s largest art museums. A much smaller second location, The Cloisters at Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan, contains an extensive collection of art, architecture, and artifacts from medieval Europe.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 to bring art and art education to the American people. The museum’s permanent collection consists of works of art from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt, paintings, and sculptures from nearly all the European masters, and an extensive collection of American and modern art. The Met maintains extensive holdings of African, Asian, Oceanian, , and Islamic art. The museum is home to encyclopedic collections of musical instruments, costumes, and accessories, as well as antique weapons and armor from around the world. Several notable interiors, ranging from 1st-century Rome through modern American design, are installed in its galleries.

Department Of The Arts Of Africa Oceania And The Americas

The breadth and depth of works from Africa, Oceania, South and Central America, and Caribbean works are on full display in the Nelson A. Rockefeller wing of the museum. The expansion of this collection makes it feel relatively new compared to other portions of the museum despite the ancient nature of the ceramics, textiles, jewelry, garments, and other archeological finds on display.

That said, this wing will be undergoing renovation through 2024 to better give these gorgeous works their due. One goal, for example, is to let more natural light in to the galleries, showcasing how colorful and bold many of these artworks can be in contrast to, as one docent put it in Inside the Met, the current, more muted vibe that might evoke painful colonial tropes of “darkest Africa.”

Weekend Evening Cocktails In The Great Hall

Met Fridays are truly one of my all-time favorite things to do in New York City. The atmosphere is magical and it doesnt get more quintessential New York.

On Friday and Saturday evenings, the Met remains open late, not only for art viewing, but also for cocktails in the Great Hall Balcony Bar and classical music from a string ensemble. The restaurant at Petrie Court Café and Wine Bar stays open until 10:30pm , and dinner is usually accompanied by piano music.

You can purchase cocktails and appetizers at the Balcony Bar, and if you get there early enough, grab one of the little tables with candles. You still get to see some beautiful art and no ticket purchase is necessary. A slate of after-hours programs changes by the week call for the current schedule.
