The Museum Initially Changed Its Pay

The Metropolitan Museum of Art will increase its general admission fee starting this Friday from $25 to $30. The museum had a long-standing pay-what-you-wish policy until March 2018, which was suspended with the aim to offset the number of visitors who opted to forego the full suggested donation amid a decrease in visitors and as the museum faced a crippling deficit estimated at around $40m.
In a previous interview with The Art Newspaper, Daniel H. Weiss, the president and chief executive of the museumwho recently announced he will step down from the role next yearsaid the pay-as-you-wish policy had basically failed and could not sustain the museum, which required significant resources in order to function. The updated policy was implemented to slightly raise the revenue brought through ticket sales by around 3% or $49m annually.
More than 7 million people come to the Met each year, but not enough visitors paid the suggested fee, something that Weiss said included various factors such as the changing demographics of visitors, with younger and more diverse audiences coming to the Met, as well as the visibility around lawsuits filed against the museum which claimed the suggested or recommended donation was misleading and confusing.

Other Ways To Get Free Admission To New Yorks Met Museum
Aside from the avenues weve mentioned, a staff member of another museum within the country can get free admission to the Met. This applies to all workers, including volunteers. Also, students from certain universities can gain entry into the Met for free. This includes students from Columbia University, among others. In case someone cannot legitimately use any of these free avenues, the best cost-saving approach would be to visit the Met as part of a group. By this approach, one is able to get a slight discount.

The Met Is Raising Its Ticket Prices Making The Museum More Expensive Than Global Counterparts Like The Louvre Or Prado
Starting July 1, the Metropolitan Museum of Art will become one of the priciest museums worldwide. The Met is raising its tickets by $5, meaning entry will now cost $30 for adults, $22 for seniors and $17 for students.
The museum sold tickets on a pay-as-you-wish basis until 2018, when it limited this option to New Yorkers as well as students from New Jersey and Connecticut.
For out of state residents, the Museum is always seeking a balance between ensuring we are providing as wide access as possible, and generating critical support for our programming, wrote a Met spokesperson in a statement. This is a modest increase for out of state and international visitors, for the first time in 11 years.
While a small number of museums have comparable or higher prices, such as the $30 admission at Seattles Chihuly Garden and Glass museum or the £26 tickets at Londons Churchill War Rooms, this increase makes the Met more expensive than some of the worlds most popular art museums.
The Louvre, Paris
General admission to the Louvre costs 17 euros . Its free for those under 18 and members of the E.U. aged 18 to 25.
The Prado, Madrid
The Prado costs 15 euros for general admission, 7.5 euros for those over 65 and is free for students and visitors under 18.
The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam
Ticket prices at the Rijksmuseum are 20 euros and free for those under the age of 18.
The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg
Entry to the State Hermitage Museum will cost you 500 rubles .

Metropolitan Museum Of Arts Recommended Admission Price
In February 2016, the parties in a deceptive advertising class-action lawsuit against The Metropolitan Museum of Art moved for preliminary approval of a settlement agreement. The complaint, which was filed in 2013, alleges that the museums marketing misleadingly makes visitors think they need to pay the recommended admission when, in reality, visitors can pay whatever amount they choose. In the proposed settlement, the museum has agreed to make changes to various marketing materials, including signs at the admission desks, website, and self-service ticket kiosks. More specifically, the museum has agreed to:
- Replace the phrase recommended admission with suggested admission,
- Add the phrase The amount you pay is up to you, and
- Change the placement and font size of words .
Another lawsuit making similar allegations remains pending.
