Nutella Maker Ferrero Scoops Up Owner Of Blue Bunny Ice Creams
MILAN, Dec 7 – Italy’s Ferrero has agreed to buy U.S. based Wells Enterprises, which makes several ice creams brands including Blue Bunny, Bomb Pop and Halo Top, the maker of Nutella chocolate spread said on Wednesday.
The acquisition fits into Ferrero’s strategic growth ambitions for the ice cream category, the Italian group said in a statement, adding that the two companies were both family-owned and had an extensive experience in confectionery.
The groups did not reveal the financial details of the deal. Wells, based in the town of Le Mars, Iowa, is expected to generate around $1.7 billion in revenue this year.
The Wells Enterprises’ transaction is the latest in a string of deals that the Italian group has completed in the United States since 2017.
Ferrero and its companies can now count more than 8,000 employees, nine offices and 18 plants in North America.
Wells, which was founded in 1913 as a dairy delivery wagon business, has become the world’s largest family owned and managed ice cream company.
Ferrero itself was founded in 1946 in a small pastry shop in Alba, near Turin in northern Italy, and has turned into a global group, boosted by the aggressive acquisition campaign launched by its Executive Chairman Giovanni Ferrero.
“This represents a win-win partnership, bringing together ice cream experts and confectionery champions,” Giovanni Ferrero said in a statement.
Ferrero bought Spanish ice cream company ICFC in a two-stage deal in 2019 and 2021.

What About Pandemic Safety
Everyone is encouraged to mask regardless of vaccination status. According to Museum of Ice Cream, its staff members are regularly tested for COVID-19, and when I was there, everyone wore a face covering including pretty much every guest I saw. There are masks at the front in case you forget yours. The museum also says that staff members regularly disinfect touch points. Though, those sprinkles in that pool are probably not getting individual spit shines after every swim.

If you consider yourself super-cautious about your leisure activities and being around other people in the pandemic, especially as Austin remains in Stage 5 risk-based guidelines, heres the real talk: Museum of Ice Cream might not be the most comfortable experience for you. Its pretty much entirely indoors, and the spaces can get a little tight. When I went, it was also pretty warm and stuffy inside.

The exciting new museum features 14 magical and interactive installations reimagined just for the Windy City and finally opened its doors on Saturday, July 16th.
Described on the Museum of Ice Cream website as a Willy Wonka factory come to life that you wont want to leave, the new Michigan Avenue location spans over 13,500 square feet of The Shops of Tribune Tower where the Chicago Tribune formerly resided.
Guests are invited on 60 to 90-minute tours through the many ice cream-themed features with breaks to sample various sweet treats between enjoying the installations.
An Instagram announcement posted late last year revealed the Chicago destination along with the question have you ever had an ice cream Chicago dog???!
A pink ice cream confection shaped like a Chicago-style hotdog was consequently expected to be one of the museums many Chicago references as well as a Cloud Gate-shaped jelly bean all of which have since been confirmed.

Millie’s Homemade Ice Cream Plans To Open 5 New Shops In 2023
PITTSBURGH – Millie’s Homemade Ice Cream plans to open five new shops in 2023.
A new location in Oakland on Pitt’s campus is already set to open in January. Millie’s is also in talks to add four more scoop shops in the region next year, according to the Pittsburgh Business Times.
Co-founder Chad Townsend told the Pittsburgh Business Times that discussions with potential franchisees are “very far along.”
Millie’s didn’t say where the new shops would open, but the website says they’re targeting franchise locations in places like Robinson, Mt. Lebanon, Cranberry, Greensburg and Morgantown.
Millie’s website says the company got its start in 2014 when Townsend bought a Paco-Jet and started making ice cream in the kitchen with his wife. Millie’s now has several locations and a food truck and they’ve started packaging pints to sell in local grocery stores.
