NYC’s 9/11 Tribute Museum closing its doors

Two exhibitions are shown in the 9/11 Museum. The exhibitions demonstrate the story of 9/11 through displays, archives, photos and actual objects. The Historical Exhibition explains the history of September 11th 2001. The exhibition is built in chronological order: it starts with the beginning of the day and finishes with how the day ended.

The Memorial Exhibition commemorates the victims. You can find a Wall of Faces where photos of all the victims are shown. Behind each individual photo, you can find more information about that person. These archives were completed by their relatives.

What Will You See

Visiting the 911 Memorial Museum is both sobering and uplifting. Youll hear stories of tragedy and heroism, leaving you both sad and hopeful. Some of the sites include:

Historical exhibits that talk about the days before and after 911. Its not advisable for kids under 10 years, because of the potential emotional impact.
In Memoriam, a tribute to the fallen.
Daily feature films in Museum Pavilion L2, the museums auditorium.
The Survivor Tree, a Callery Pear which lived through the disaster, was rehabilitated, and replanted at Ground Zero. Seedlings from this tree are annually donated to three communities that have survived tragedies of their own.
Twin Reflecting Pools drop into the largest man-made waterfall in the US. The pools lie in what would have been the shadow of the Twin Towers, and measure nearly an acre each. At the edge of the pools, there are bronze engravings naming everyone we lost. The pools are 10m metres deep .
The Sphere, which was originally positioned between the Twin Towers, survived the attack and now has an eternal flame as a tribute.
The Observatory includes a pre-show, 3 floors to explore , a pod elevator ride, and See Forever Theatre.

Reasons To Take Your Kids To The 9/11 Museum

The museum is tastefully done. Rather than exploit the sad human stories, which it could have easily done, the stories honor the victims. There are no sections dedicated to the desperate people jumping from the towers and no footage of victims family members crying.

Is there video of the terrorist attacks with planes hitting the twin towers? Yes. Of the buildings imploding? Yes. Of the thousands of missing person flyers that appeared afterward? Yes. But theres no gore.

The museum displays details of the terrorist attacks of 9/11 along with the 1993 World Trade Center bombing without focusing on the hijackers. In fact, photos of the terrorists are in a low, hidden spot.

The Fdny Memorial Wall

Located on Greenwich Street at the corner of Liberty Street, just southeast of the 9/11 Memorial hangs the FDNY Memorial Wall by artist Joe Petrovics.

This 7000 pound bronze wall is attached to the wall of Engine and Ladder Company 10, the local fire station.

It is a memorial to the 343 active NYC firefighters who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001 + 1 local attorney who was a volunteer firefighter outside of the city.

The 56-foot long bas-relief sculpture depicts the World Trade Center towers in flames and scenes of firefighters executing their duties.

The 9/11 Tribute Museum is a space for visitors to unite with survivors of the terror attacks. Here youll find artifacts and personal histories showcasing what really happened on that historic day in Lower Manhattan. Even though this one of the best things to do in Manhattan, we would not recommend a visit with the children. For those who dont want or cant afford to pay 24 bucks for a ticket, it would be good to know that there is free admission for the 9/11 Memorial Museum on Tuesday evenings for New Yorkers with valid ID.

The 9/11 Museum and Memorial will leave a strong impression on you. This is a museum most people visit in silence, in awe at a part of history most of us remember, yet we still know little about. You will be overwhelmed with sadness and anger at some point.

The 9/11 Museum is not recommended for children below the age of 10. The exhibit may not be best suited for such a young audience. Furthermore, younger kids may end up getting bored in a place that is so quiet. If you are set on visiting, you may want to find a babysitter to take care of your children while youre at the museum.

Being in the middle of the Financial District, there arenât too many restaurants in the 9/11 Memorial and Museum area, but there are a couple of worthwhile places:

Delmonicoâsâ A relatively expensive steakhouse but has a pretty high rating on TripAdvisor.
Leoâs Bagelsâ A place where youâll find the typical New York Bagel that I recommend to everyone I know who travels to New York.

How Much Is The Admission To The 9/11 Museum

Tickets for the museum can be purchased up to six months in advance. All admission tickets include entry to all exhibitions. Admissions for the 9/11 Memorial & Museum start at $26 for adults, $20 for young adults , youth pay $15 and seniors, as well as college students, pay $20. U.S. veterans pay $18.

Where Is The 9/11 Museum

The museum and memorial fountains are located in lower Manhattan, at 180 Greenwich Street. The memorial fountains and reflecting pools mark the footprints of the Twin Towers with the museum just steps away.

Nearby, One World Trade Centers tower spire brings the building to a height of 1,776 feet in recognition of the year the United States Declaration of Independence was signed.

Just 1/2 mile south of the 9/11 Museum is Battery Park. Statue Cruises operate ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island from the dock by Castle Clinton within the park.

/11 Tribute Museum Another Option

9/11 museum opens on anniversary for the first time

There is a third place you can visit if you want to learn more about the history of 9/11: the 9/11 Tribute Museum. While the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum is the official one, the 9/11 Tribute Museum is run by by the September 11th Families Association.

9/11 Tribute Museum was previously called 9/11 Tribute Center.

The main difference is that here you have the chance to join a guided tour led by someone who was there in that tragic day a family member, a first responder, or a survivor. Its a more intimate experience, and its way less crowded than the official museum.

My recommendation would be to visit the official museum first, and coming here afterwards to hear about the events in a more personal way. You can either visit the museum on your own , or join a guided tour that lasts approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.

I suggest getting in advance your 9/11 Tribute Museum ticket to skip the lines. If you prefer to go more in depth and join a tour led by a survivor or family member , you can see here the 9/11 Tribute Museum & Memorial Walking Tour.

The Victims Of 9/11 Have A Prominent Place In The Museum

The Memorial Exhibition in the museum is a room dedicated to all the victims of 9/11 and the earlier, 1993, bombing of the World Trade Center. It is a room full of photos, heartbreaking because these are all people that are no longer with us, but the overall effect is more pensive than weeping because so many of the pictures are of smiling faces. Family members chose to remember the victims in happier times.

You can learn more about the people behind the photographs by clicking on touchscreens around the room. Family members have shared more photographs and reflections for these profiles as well as even more in-depth profiles projected in a separate, inner room, accompanied by audio recordings.

The Memorial Exhibition was oddly one of my favorite parts of the museum. I took comfort in knowing none of these people would be forgotten. I think children would feel the same. Most children will also be inured by the fact that many of them have yet to experience real tragedy and so will not connect the pictures to a sense of loss personally.

The Highlights Of 9/11 Museum And Memorial

The main sight at 9/11 Memorial is the twin reflecting pools representing the footprints of the Twin Towers. These are the largest man made waterfall of North America. In the same place, youll also find the plaques with the names of those who died in the 1993 and 2001 terrorist attacks.

Other spots you shouldnt miss are the FDNY Memorial Wall, a tribute to the firefighters who died in the aftermath of the attacks and the Sphere, a sculpture by German artist Fritz Koenig that is meant to represent world peace through trade and that was actually recovered after the terrorist attacks.

Americas Response Monument, known to tourists as the Horse Soldier Statue is a tribute to the first soldiers sent to Afghanistan in the aftermath of the attacks.

Finally, make sure to go to the Survivor Tree, a series of white oak trees that line up the Memorial and to the World Trade Centers Cross.

How To Get To The 9/11 Memorial In New York

The Memorial and the Museum are located at 180 Greenwich Street in lower Manhattan. You can easily use Uber to get here if you prefer, but the best option in my opinion is using the subway its cheaper, most sustainable, and in most cases faster.

You can take the A, C, 1, 2, or 3 trains and get off at Chambers Street, or the A, C, J, Z, 2, 3, 4, or 5 trains to Fulton Street, or the E train straight to the World Trade Center.
