The Indianapolis Museum Of Art At Newfields Has Edited And Apologised For An Employment Listing That Said It Was Seeking A Director Who Would Work Not Only To Attract A More Diverse Audience But Also To Maintain Its Traditional Core White Art Audience

The museums director and CEO, Charles Venable, said in an interview Saturday that the decision to use white was intentional and explained that it had been intended to indicate that the museum would not abandon its existing audience as part of its efforts toward greater diversity, equity and inclusion.

I deeply regret that the choice of language clearly has not worked out to mirror our overall intention of building our core art audience by welcoming more people in the door, he said. We were trying to be transparent about the fact that anybody who is going to apply for this job really needs to be committed to DEI efforts in all parts of the museum.

The museum subsequently revised the positions description in the listing, which now reads traditional core art audience.

Venable said it was unfortunate that what he called the museums core commitment to inclusion was overshadowed by the word choice.

This is a six-page job description, not a single bullet point, he said. We talk a lot about our commitment to diversity in all kinds of ways, from the collections to programming to hiring.

But, he added, I can certainly say that if we were writing this again, with all the feedback weve gotten, we wouldnt write it that way.

Malina Jeffers and Alan Bacon, guest curators for the museums upcoming DRIP: Indys #BlackLivesMatter Street Mural exhibition, slated to open in April, said in a statement Saturday night that they had decided they could no longer do so.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art has apologised for the wording of a job posting that sought a new director who could maintain its traditional, core, white art audience.

The job listing said the museum, also known as Newfields, wanted to attract a new and more diverse group of visitors. Museum officials told the New York Times that while the wording was intentional it was one bullet point in a six-page job description highlighting this mission.

Director and chief executive Charles L Venable, told The Indianapolis Star: I think the fact you can read that one sentence and now reading it as a single sentence or a clause, I certainly can understand and regret that it could be taken that way. It certainly was not the intent at all.

The museum edited the posting by deleting the word white, but for some artists linked to the museum the damage has already been done.

Malina Simone Jeffers and Alan Bacon, guest curators for an upcoming exhibit called DRIP: Indys #BlackLivesMatter Street Mural, told the Associated Press they were dropping out until action was taken to rectify the situation.

Calls for Newfields president to resign after job posting sparks outrage

Morgan, who’s now an independent curator based in Atlanta, said that people began reaching out to her Friday night with news of the “traditional, core, white art audience” language. She told IndyStar on Saturday that wording shows the museum’s warped idea that decentering whiteness which is putting cultural productions of African, Indigenous and women artists on par with widely celebrated white men would mean excluding white people. Morgan said that’s not the case and that the museum should take the time to understand what inclusion and equity mean.

“The entire job description is chock full of diversity language, but it’s completely disconnected from what that language actually means because if you were invested, if you care, right, if you were knowledgeable about all this DEI language that you’ve got up and through this job description, that sentence would have never been there,” Morgan said. “You can’t do both.”

Using the words “traditional” and “core” is coded, Morgan said, because Black people, Indigenous and Latin American communities aren’t traditional audiences.

“Traditional is a stand-in for white, right? Core is also a stand-in for white,” Morgan said.

INDIANAPOLIS The Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields has edited and apologized for an employment listing that said it was seeking a director who would work not only to attract a more diverse audience but to maintain its traditional, core, white art audience.

The museums director and chief executive, Charles L. Venable, said in an interview on Saturday that the decision to use white had been intentional and explained that it had been intended to indicate that the museum would not abandon its existing audience as part of its efforts toward greater diversity, equity and inclusion.

I deeply regret that the choice of language clearly has not worked out to mirror our overall intention of building our core art audience by welcoming more people in the door, he said. We were trying to be transparent about the fact that anybody who is going to apply for this job really needs to be committed to D.E.I. efforts in all parts of the museum.

The museum subsequently revised the position description linked in the listing, which now reads traditional core art audience.

Until then, they added, GANGGANG will not continue as guest curators for this exhibition.

  • How People Started Talking About The Job Description

The language in the job description appeared to initially come to broad Indianapolis attention when printmaker Dominic Senibaldi, executive director of Cat Head Press, shared it on Facebook and via an Instagram story early Friday evening. Senibaldi declined comment in an email, saying: “Right now I do not think my voice is the one that needs to be heard.”

The Facebook post has since been deleted.

In a call Saturday with IndyStar, Newfields CEO and president Charles Venable said that the intention was to build a larger audience that added and not subtracted people. A statement said that the museum’s audience had been and still is too homogenous and that it feels responsibility to diversify it.

“I think the fact you can read that one sentence and now reading it as a single sentence or a clause, I certainly can understand and regret that it could be taken that way. It certainly was not the intent at all,” Venable said.

“We’re now hearing feedback saying that … people commenting didn’t get what our intent was. So we’ve taken that feedback and we will refine that language.”

Katie Betley, chair of Newfields’ Board of Trustees, referred inquiries to Venable. Mark Oppenheim, founder and a principal with the search firm, wrote in an email that the firm doesn’t give press interviews but added its devotion to becoming more inclusive, just and equitable.

Newfields also issued a public statement:

The president of the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields has resigned after the institution posted a job listing seeking a new head who would maintain the museums traditional, core, white art audience, according to a report.

We are sorry. We have made mistakes. We have let you down, the museum board said in a statement, the Indianapolis Star reported.

We are ashamed of Newfields leadership and of ourselves. We have ignored, excluded, and disappointed members of our community and staff. We pledge to do better. For those expressing outrage and frustration we are listening, it added.

The board of trustees and the board of governors which posted the statement to the Newfields website Wednesday thanked Charles Venable for his service and said his resignation was necessary for the museum to meet the communitys needs.

Im not able to talk right now, Venable told the news outlet after resigning, adding that he would not be able to talk in the future.

Jerry Wise, the chief financial officer, will be the interim president, according to the newspaper.

A Newfields rep told the outlet in an email that the institution is not taking interviews at this time and did not answer questions about the terms of Venables departure and whether he was responsible for the traditional, core, white art audience language in the listing.

The wording was a bullet point in a six-page job description that also said the museum was working to attract a more diverse audience.

INDIANAPOLIS After editing and then apologizing for an insensitive job posting that appeared on a recruiting site, Charles L. Venable, the president of Newfields, the 152-acre campus that is home to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, has resigned.

We are ashamed of Newfields leadership and of ourselves, the museums board of trustees and board of governors said in a statement on its website Wednesday, in which they said they had accepted Venables resignation. We have ignored, excluded, and disappointed members of our community and staff. We pledge to do better.

We thank him for his service and agree that his resignation is necessary for Newfields to become the cultural institution our community needs and deserves, the statement said.

Venable, 60, has led the museum as director and chief executive since 2012 he took on the newly created position of president of Newfields earlier this year. Jerry Wise, the museums chief financial officer, will serve as interim president of Newfields.

Venable said drafts of the description were written and edited by both the museum and the search firm.
