Group Exhibition
Special Programming:

ON ART, Wednesday, June 9, 2021 | Airs at 6 PM

Unapologetic Conversations of Hair & Nonconformity brings attention to the past discriminatory practices that have threatened to remove people of color from professional opportunities. Systemic prejudices have historically limited access to opportunities due to nonconformity to cultural standards that promote discriminatory practices towards natural and true, authentic selves. Through personal narrative and artistic practice, the ten artists showcased here promote conversations around identity, access, discrimination, and conformity through the celebration of authenticity and pride in ones natural being.

The Delaware Contemporary presents Through a Glass, Darkly, in all of our main galleries occupying more than 6,000 square feet. Curated by three guest curators, Kristin Deady, Jenna Lucente, and Alexander Rosenberg, this museum-wide exhibition includes new and recent works by artists working with glass and glass-related materials and processes, exposing the materials dual nature. Selected works engage the historical promise and power of the material to reveal and to bring clarity, while challenging viewers to acknowledge an inherent interconnectedness between enhancement and distortion.

To see through a glass or mirror darkly is to have an obscure or imperfect vision of reality. The expression comes from the writings of the Apostle Paul he explains that we do not now see clearly, but at the end of time, we will do so.

Historically, glass has augmented human perception, allowing us to view parts of the world that are otherwise elusive to our limited natural senses. While revealing the minuscule and distant, preserving the fleeting, and encapsulating the fragile and reactive, glass also obscures our perception of the very things it helps us to observe. The nature of the material is two-sided it both enhances and subverts vision. Glass is an instrument for enlightenment, and at the same time, it is a driver of misinformation.

Black Artists Then And Now On View In Wilmington Delaware And Philadelphia

Hank Willis Thomas, All Power to All People .

When Percy Ricks reached out to the Delaware Art Museum searching for a location to host the revolutionary exhibition he was curating, he didnt even receive the courtesy of a return call. Not only was the museums answer no, it was delivered with an insulting dismissal at his even imagining to exist on its level.

Big mistake.

That was 1971.

Ricks was Black.

The Delaware Art Museum was white, its brick exterior disguising its white insides: a white director, white board and white curators representing white patrons looking at white artists in a white neighborhood.

Ricks would have to settle on the Wilmington Armory to host his show.

What a show it was.

Black artists who had achieved recognition and would go on to become icons of American artRomare Bearden, Sam Gilliam, Loïs Mailou Jones, Faith Ringgold, Alma Thomas, Hale Woodruffwere joined by up-and-coming Black artists as well as local Black artistsHumbert Howard, Simmie Knox, Edward Loper, Sr., and Edward Loper, Jr.

His guiding philosophy for Afro-American Images 1971 was a purposeful commitment that the exhibition be organized by the recommendation of those who are totally involved and committed to the Black art community, particularly the artists themselves in his words.

On the 50th anniversary of the show, the Delaware Art Museum makes amends for its historic snub by presenting Afro-American Images 1971: The Vision of Percy Ricks, a restaging of the exhibit.
