Located in the heart of downtown Springfield, , the Springfield Museums offer access to five world-class museums, including the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum and the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden, all under a single admission. The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum, the newest museum on the Quad, is devoted to Springfield native Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss! The first floor features family friendly, interactive exhibits and the second floor, curated by Geisels two step daughters and great nephew, recreates Geisels studio and living room and features never before publicly displayed art, family photographs and letters, and the original Geisel Grove sign which used to hang in Forest Park.

Since 2002, the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden has been a popular spot for children to enjoy climbing and exploring 14 Seuss-themed sculptures. Featured in a grassy quad, the sculptures are surrounded by five museums: the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum, the Springfield Science Museum, the Michele & Donald DAmour Museum of Fine Arts, the Lyman & Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History, and the brand new Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum. Purchasing one ticket will allow you to explore all five museums and there is lots of free parking in nearby parking lots.

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to check out the opening of The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum. We were excited to be the first ones in line, right behind the step-daughter of Theodore Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss.

Amelia Park Childrens Museum is one of Westfields treasures, a place where imagination is inspired and encouraged. This year marks its 25th anniversary a fundraising celebration is planned for October 21, 2022. The museum was founded as Discover Westfield Childrens Museum on Elm St. in Westfield.
Through hard work and generosity, the museum moved to a brand-new, much larger building in 2008. The 12,000 square-foot building in Amelia Park houses 6,000 square feet of exhibits and program space.
Executive Director Ray Radigan shared, How fortunate Westfield is to have a childrens museum. Its really special because there are only about a dozen childrens museums in Massachusetts.
The museum offers hands-on exhibits and events, daily activities and field trips. It also brings face painting, movie nights and free events into the community.
What better place to celebrate a childs birthday than at the Amelia Park Childrens Museum? There are several themed party options such as Dinosaurs, Bubbles, and Polymers.
The latest project for the museum is the Literacy Learning Initiative. This library exhibit features shelves of new books donated by the Lisa Libraries. Additionally, the Davis Foundation, Westfield-based Shurtleff Childrens Services, and the Westfield Cultural Council funded the reading nooks and a free picture book exchange.
It reminds me how meaningful this is.

In the past, efforts have been made to provide each of the city’s eight wards a seat in the city council, instead of the current at-large format. There would still be some at-large seats under this format. The primary argument for this has been that City Councilors live in only four of the city’s wards. An initiative to change the composition failed to pass the City Council twice. In 2007 Mayor Charles V. Ryan and City Councilor Jose Tosado proposed a home-rule amendment that would expand the council to thirteen members adding four seats to the existing nine member at large system, but allocated between eight ward and five at large seats. This home-rule petition was adopted by the City Council 81, and was later passed by the State Senate and House and signed by the Governor. On election day, November 6, 2007, city residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of changing the City Council and School Committee. The ballot initiative that established a new council with five at-large seats and eight ward seats passed 31. On November 3, 2009, Springfield held its first ward elections in 50 years.
