For Now Members Only As Imagine Childrens Museum Reopens

Imagine Children’s Museum | Everett, Washington

Its just nice to get something back to normal, a mom said as the Everett destination welcomed some visitors.

Angela Nabors boys were a blur of motion. At the Imagine Childrens Museum Wednesday, they jumped and grabbed for colorful scarves shooting from the Air-Mazing Laboratorys maze of transparent tubes.

Little brother Arden, 20 months old, stayed close to their mom as Isaac, 9, Eli, 7, and Ezra, 4, joined other kids in the fun. It was the museums first day of welcoming visitors in more than a year.

Its not open for all not yet. The museum at 1502 Wall St. in downtown Everett is open to members only, at least through June 20. Entry is by reservation only through the museums online time-ticketing system. There are two-hour sessions Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Masks are required for those 3 and older. No walk-ins are being admitted.

The museum has about 5,000 memberships, said Kimberlee Valvick, its communications director. Theres good news for those wondering about members paid-for time when they couldnt visit during the pandemic. As of June 2, memberships have been extended for the number of days that would have been remaining when the museum closed March 13, 2020.

Imagine Childrens Museum Executive Director Nancy Johnson is well aware that the group most served children under age 12 is the demographic not yet eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination.

The Imagine Childrens Museum Is Continuing Plans For A Four

The childrens museum, which has been closed due to coronavirus since March, has been busy raising funds for its $25 million goal.

Nancy Johnson, executive director of the Imagine Childrens Museum, told The Daily Herald: We were doing so well, we were almost at the halfway mark.

Then COVID knocked on the door. Like everyone, we had to say, Now what?

According to the publication, the museum purchased a parking lot adjacent to its current home more than a decade ago. The site will house the four-storey expansion.

We are taking this head on, said Johnson, who added that the project will bring jobs and economic vitality.

Museum Recently Received A $500000 Grant

On the second floor, there will be an ecosystem exhibit with an intertidal aquarium, areas for hands-on engineering, an art studio and maritime exploration.

The third floor of the expansion will house an auditorium and restaurant, while the fourth floor will boast learning labs.

A big goal of the expansion is more room for kids to enjoy exhibits by playing and interacting together with adults, said Johnson. Today, grownups often have to stand aside to make space for all the children.

We think its going to be many years of healing, added Johnson. The museum is a resource for children and families. Physically and emotionally, its a safe place to be.

Elsewhere, the Guggenheim Museum approved a plan to become more inclusive and racially diverse, after accusations by employees of entrenched racism at the museum in New York.

Look Out For The Lookout

First off we headed straight into the magical treetop canopy in the Woodlands Adventure Gallery. Weve hiked to a few fun lookouts in the area, but getting cloudless weather is like winning the lottery. Luckily, the view is always perfect from the new Pilchuck Fire Lookout and you dont have to hike five miles on a rocky summit to get there!

Climb a few stairs and bounce across rope bridges to the lookout before venturing over to the bird-watching tower. Beautiful felt versions of Pacific Northwest fowl like the Stellers Jay and Coopers Hawk grace the trees you can spot them from the canopy or the ADA-accessible space below.

Dont skip the forest floor, though. A lifelike pond gives kids the chance to catch fish using magnetic rods, roast a smore by a campfire or build a cairn out of colorful blocks. My daughter found this area really engaging before we could head upstairs, she had to take one last spin through the canopy, climbing next to a Sasquatch lounging in his hammock.

Tinker Create And Build

Imagine Children

In the art space at the top of the stairs, kids can either choose a designated project coffee filter parachutes were on the menu during our visit or make up their own with supplies placed around the room. An almost-complete Tinker Shop will soon allow kids to use real tools for mini construction projects.

My daughter and her new friend eventually tore themselves away from the Distribution Center and headed for the Engineer It! Gallery. Decals on the wall reminded them to embrace failure as they cut out their own paper plate flyers to send through a wind tunnel. Fortunately, there were plenty of plates available as some attempts were more successful than others.

They took a quick seat at the joysticks in the crane cab hanging over the museums entrance, but the allure of the outdoor playground was too strong to stick around long.

    Expansion Going Ahead Despite Covid

Imagine Childrens Museum – Everett, WA

Although Johnson did not name a design team or construction company, she suggested that work could start by February 2021 and complete in 2022.

The Imagine Childrens Museum recently received a $500,000 grant from the MJ Murdock Charitable Trust, based in Vancouver, Washington.

We are grateful for organizations like the Imagine Childrens Museum that help inspire individuals and families, particularly young children, through engaging, playful learning, said Dr Steve Moore, executive director of MJ Murdock Charitable Trust.

Were incredibly grateful to the Murdock Trust for their continued investment in our museum and in educational play for children, said Dr Clay Wertheimer, board president for Imagine Childrens Museum.

The projects first floor will feature woodland habitats, a treetop canopy area, puppet theatre, fishing pond and wildlife rescue centre.

    More On The Second Floor

The second floor should really count as two floors. A mezzanine level plays host to a port with a block-lifting crane and a tugboat with a realistic-looking radar screen.

One of the things I appreciated most about the museum was the conversation starters around every corner. From the fire prevention strategies and animal track identification tips on the first floor to the life jacket safety information near the mezzanines rowboat, families will find many opportunities for bonus learning.

Imagine Childrens Museum Gears Up For September Reopening And Annual Fundraiser With Support From Peoples Bank

Imagine Childrens Museum in Everett, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of families in Snohomish County, looks forward to its reopening and annual fundraiser at the end of September. SnohomishTalk recently joined Melissa Siv, District Branch Manager at the Peoples Bank Everett Financial Center, and Nancy Johnson, Executive Director of Imagine Childrens Museum, to talk about the role of the museum in the community and the importance of local partnerships to support its growth.

For a community rich in diversity and families, organizations like Imagine Childrens Museum are a focal point in healthy youth development. The purpose of the museum is to improve the lives of children through playful learning and education, says Johnson. Every child comes accompanied to the museum by a caring adult and we are here to support that adult-child interaction while helping them in all areas of the childs development and well-being.

In the museum itself, there are hundreds of activities for families to use creativity and inspiration throughout their visit. Think of it as an interactive play space where kids take part in all types of activities that they may not have access to otherwise, Johnson says. The museum is here for them to explore and create, discover, learn, and imagine all the things we know are really important to their life-long love of learning and success in school.

Ways To Play In Imagine Childrens Museum

There are a large variety of experiences available to the Everett community through Imagine Childrens Museum. Here are just a few of the exhibits that are available:

    Rise and Shine Farm

This exhibit is a great way for children to learn about the fundamentals of local agriculture. They can practice milking a cow, play fun farm games, collect eggs, and learn communication skills.

    Imagine-Air

The Imagine-Air is a play area modeled after a commercial aircraft. Children can pretend to be the pilot, a flight attendant, a passenger, or a member of the launch crew. This exhibit provides many ways for children to explore their imagination and learn about the logistics behind take-off.

    Piccolo Cafe

Hungry? Just stop by Piccolo Cafe where children can become chefs. This make-believe restaurant gives children a chance to role play and learn organizational skills, like running a restaurant.

    Thinker Linkers Construction Studio

Thinker Linkers are interlocking log pieces available for play and building in the construction studio. Playing with building materials and blocks gives children cognitive skills and helps with mathematical development.

    Air-Mazing Laboratory

The Air-mazing Laboratory is an extremely interactive exhibit that shoots fabric scarves through a maze of air-tubes for children to jump and catch at the end. This exhibit gives children the opportunity to learn a lot about air movement.
