Madison, helped shape the principle of judicial review. With the largest collection of original Marshall family pieces, guided tours of his home offer an in-depth look at the formation of American government through the lens of the federal judiciary. Marshall built his home in Richmonds historic Court End neighborhood in 1790 and lived there for forty-five years until his death. It is a Federal-style brick building that originally included several outbuildings, including his law office.

I was so impressed with the quality of the tour guide at this house. Im a lawyer so I generally know about John Marshall. But I was amazed at how much more I learned. Our guide Ethan was a wealth of knowledge and had a detailed answer for every question we had for him. It was a highlight of my Richmond trip.

At the St. Johns Episcopal Church in 1775, Patrick Henry made his famous speech that included, Give me liberty or give me death.
In the churchs graveyard, you can find the Declaration of Independence signer George Wythes and Edgar Allans mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poes final resting place.
The church is still open and welcomes visitors on Sunday mornings for services. To learn more about the churchs history, attend a public reenactment or take a historic graveyard tour.

It’s an amazing tale of the purchase, sight unseen, of an English manor house facing demolition, shipping the best bits to Richmond, and using all that to “rebuild” Agecroft in a somewhat altered appearance. And it was done brilliantly. Lived in for 40 years and now a museum with period furnishings. It’s a self guided tour but there is a guide on each floor to answer questions. Lovely gardens.

The Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond is one of the most harrowing experiences offered at any Virginia museum. This free museum has four main exhibits. The Core Exhibition tells the story of the Holocaust chronologically through the eyes of the victims. Take a sober look at the 300 artifacts on display before heading to the authentic German freight car, used during the war, in the next section. The Ipson Saga tells the story of the Holocaust through the eyes of the Ipson family. The Museum and White House of the Confederacy is a neoclassical mansion built in 1818. President Jefferson Davis lived here during the Civil War years, and several pieces of furniture owned by him are on display.
