The Spanish Civil War And The Franco Period
During the , the city, and Catalonia in general, were resolutely Republican. Many enterprises and public services were by the and UGT unions. As the power of the Republican government and the Generalitat diminished, much of the city was under the effective control of anarchist groups. The anarchists lost control of the city to their own allies, the Communists and official government troops, after the street fighting of the Barcelona . The fall of the city on 26 January 1939, caused a mass exodus of civilians who fled to the French border. The resistance of Barcelona to ‘s coup d’état was to have lasting effects after the defeat of the Republican government. The autonomous institutions of were abolished, and the use of the in public life was suppressed. Barcelona remained the second largest city in Spain, at the heart of a region which was relatively industrialised and prosperous, despite the devastation of the civil war. The result was a large-scale immigration from poorer regions of Spain ” rel=”nofollow”> Galicia), which in turn led to rapid urbanisation.

A Building By Richard Meier
This American architect needs no introduction, since he has designed many buildings scattered around the world such as the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and the new City Hall in The Hague. The edifice, which was built between 1991 and 1995, was conceived as a group of prisms and occupies a space of 14,300 m2. In the centre of the museum is a space in the form of a cylinder that traverses all three floors, starting from the ground floor located at street level. The straight and curved lines combine creating galleries and skylights that sieve the light. Experts in architecture note that Meier reinterprets rationalism and finds associations with masters such as Le Corbusier.
Therefore, the MACBA of Barcelona divides its rooms in a rational way, seeking a good interior connection and lighting that is appropriate for art. The entrance is located in the centre of the main façade, which is also where the passage to the garden begins. Said garden divides the ground floor into two parts: a lobby that leads to the exhibition rooms, and a private area and a book store. From the outside, its distinguishing mark is the glass galleries.
The MACBA auditorium, which has a capacity for 200 people, is found in the basement. It has fantastic acoustics and usually plays host to concerts, lectures, films and other artistic events.

Mies Van Der Rohe Pavilion
Initially served as German Pavilion for the International Exposition in Barcelona in 1929, the building was demolished in 1930. However, fifty years later, in 1983, it was reconstructed exactly as it was. The pavilion was not built as a hall for conducting exhibitions, but as an exhibit itself.

National Museum Of Catalan Art
An editorial fave, the MNAC sits on top of the Western side of Montjuic mountain, in a magnificent building called the Palau Nacional, which overlooks the famous Magic Fountain of Barcelona. Where To Find Macba
MACBA is situated in the district of Ciutat Vella which can be easily reached by tourists who are visiting the neighborhood of Raval, its at No.1 Plaça dels Àngels. The building is easily identifiable because of its irregular, modern, white shape which is a complete contrast to the general character of the neighborhood with its “vivid” colors. Over time, the square in front of the Museum’s entrance has become a favorite spot for skate-boarders who have turned the urban architecture into their own personal training track. This results in a free show for passersby and a general sense of freedom. MACBA really is the true essence of contemporary art!
In order to reach the museum from the center, we would recommend going on foot, partially for the sake of convenience but also so that you can explore some of the typical streets of Barcelona’s historic city center. For example, from the Plaza Catalunya you can get to MACBA in about six minutes on foot. You would walk along the length of La Rambla until you reach the Carrer del Bonsuccés where you will turn right and then carry straight on. The closest Metro station to the museum is Universitat . In front of the Museum there is also a bicing station.

Typical Richard Meier building with rectilinear elements expressed in his trademark white metal panels and key elements expressed in white render as organic forms in plan. Meier has created lyrical forms here and the building appears successful when view from many angles.
It could be argued that Richard Meier should have engaged more with the context of Barcelona architecture as the building appears on every level to be similar to ones he´s designed for other cities. However the pure whiteness is a joy to behold in the scruffy backlands off La Rambla and the importance of the building suggests breaking the texture of Barcelona is appropriate.

The building that today houses Museu d’Art Contemporàni de Barcelona was designed by the architect Richard Meier and is located in the citys Raval neighborhood, just steps away from the Center for Contemporary Culture .

A Long History: Stage 1
We will travel back to 1995 to talk about the origins of the MACBA, precisely to 28 November when it was inaugurated. Several decades have passed since then, during which it has become consolidated as a museum, gained prestige and its collection has grown in size. Also noteworthy is the important line of work it has adopted, based on research and a deep reflection on art.
However, the MACBA did not emerge from one day to the next. It was an idea that began to germinate in 1959 when certain art experts began to discuss the need to gather a good collection of contemporary art so it could be exhibited in a single place. Alexandre Cirici and Cesáreo Rodríguez-Aguilera were among the first figures to express their interest in this project.
While looking for a location for the art gallery, they decided to arrange exhibitions with artists of the moment such as Jordi Curós, Antoni Bonet, Jean Fautrier, August Puig, Albert Ràfols-Casamada, Ángel Ferrant and Josep Maria de Sucre, among others. Everything was going well until in 1963, when the exhibition Lart i la pau was opened apparently rejected by the political powers of the moment, part of the funding it had been given was withdrawn. That was the end of the first attempt to create the museum. The part of the funds that were going to be allocated to its establishment went to the Víctor Balaguer Museum in Vilanova i la Geltrú instead.
