A new space dedicated to the study of French artist Henri Matisse shines a spotlight on the largest and most comprehensive collection of works by the artist in a public museum. The Ruth R. Marder Center for Matisse Studieslocated on the first floor adjacent to The Nancy Dorman and Stanley Mazaroff Center for the Study of Prints, Drawings and Photographsserves as a major resource for scholars and visitors interested in learning more about the French masters practice.

Bma Exhibition Examines Matisses Friendship With A Baltimore Collector
A Modern Influence: Henri Matisse, Etta Cone, and Baltimore is the first comprehensive exhibition to explore the singular 43-year friendship between Baltimore collector Etta Cone and French modern master Henri Matisse . Their relationship laid the foundation for the BMAs Matisse collection of more than 1,200 paintings and works on paper the largest public collection of the artists work in the world.
Etta Cone first visited Matisses Paris studio in January 1906. She immediately felt a kinship with Matisse, purchased two drawings during the visit, and returned several weeks later to purchase another drawing and watercolor. Cones older sister, Claribel also came to know Matisse together, the two sisters collected approximately 700 works, including paintings such as Blue Nude , The Yellow Dress , and Large Reclining Nude .
Following Claribels death, Matisse traveled to Baltimore in 1930, and, for the first time, saw the impressive holdings that the Cone sisters had already acquired. It is likely that during this visit Etta also mentioned her interest in supporting the BMA. From this point, Matisse began to create and offer Etta works with her collection and the museum in mind.
The exhibition precedes the December 2021 opening of the Ruth R. Marder Center for Matisse Studies at the BMA, which will allow for greater public and scholarly engagement with the museums Matisse collection.

Art Of The Pacific Islands
This exhibit includes artwork from several cultural traditions of the Pacific Islands, including Melanesia and Polynesia. Works in collection include jewelry, ornaments, and tapa cloths.
Of notable interest is a finely carved lizard of dark wood and shell from Easter Island a battle pectoral created from hundreds of Nassa shells, which highlights Middi art of New Britain and an 18th-century royal Hawaiian necklace.
Other highlights of the collection include a breast ornament embellished with small birds and stars that figured as insignia of prestige for the Tonga of the Fiji Islands. Featuring whale ivory and pearl shell design, it is recognized as one of the largest of its kind.

Drawn from The Baltimore Museum of Arts permanent collection, perhaps the finest collection of Matisses work in the world, Matisse: Life in Color offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for San Antonio, and indeed, all of Texas and our region, to share in the beauty and importance of such a magnificent body of work.
The exhibition will enrich our community and increase the national and international stature of the San Antonio Museum of Art as well as the city of San Antonio as an important cultural destination, said Katherine C. Luber, the The Kelso Director of the San Antonio Museum of Art.
As one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Henri Matisse fundamentally altered the course of modern art with his stylistic innovations. Across a succession of stylistic periods, Matisse aimed to discover the essential character of things through art that expressed balance and serenity. He experimented throughout his career with abandoning conventional perspective and form in favor of dramatically simplified areas of pure color, flat shapes and decorative patterns.

Art Of The Ancient Americas
This collection contains works from 59 distinct artistic traditions from Aztec and Maya of Mesoamerica, Chimú and Muisca of AndeanSouth America, and Nicoya and Atlantic Watershed of Costa Rica. The collection includes works from 2500 BC to AD 1521. The core collection of 120 objects was given to the museum by Alan Wurtzburger in 1958, which significantly expanded the scope of the existing collection and provided momentum for a traveling exhibition of Peruvian ceramics titled Myths of Ancient Peru .
The collection is particularly admired for its West Mexico ceramics, including an important Nayarit house model and an enthroned chief. Also on display is a unique assemblage of 23 figures in dance regalia which celebrates ancient performance and highlights the diversity of Colima art.
Other notable pieces include a finely worked serpentine figure of Olmec mastery, elegant portrayals of Maya and Aztec noblewomen showcasing the integral roles women played in the social, political, economic, and spiritual realms of society, and miniature gold votives in the Muisca tradition.

BALTIMORE — A new center dedicated to the study of French artist Henri Matisse is set to open at the Baltimore Museum of Art on Dec. 12.
With more than 1,200 of the artist’s works in its holdings, the museum claims to have the largest public collection of Matisse’s paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures in the world.
The 2,500-square-foot Ruth R. Marder Center for Matisse Studies includes a dedicated exhibit gallery a library and study room for scholars and students storage and offices, the museum said.
Artist Stanley Whitney created a set of three stained-glass windows for the space.
To mark the opening of the center, the BMA is presenting “Matisse: The Sinuous Line,” an exhibit exploring “the artist’s graceful use of line and innate ability to suggest personality and mood with just several strokes or with many more in his fully fleshed-out compositions,” the museum said. The show is the first installation in a two-part series.
“With the inauguration of the Marder Matisse Center, we are establishing a new resource that invites research, discovery, and dialogue about Matisse’s significance to art history and his ongoing relevance to contemporary artists,” said museum director Christopher Bedford. “Our vision for the center is to engage scholars and the public alike by making a greater portion of our Matisse collection visible and by dedicating space where individuals can gather to learn and engage with the work and each other.”

The Baltimore Museum of Art has opened a research center focused on the work of modern art icon Henri Matisse. The $5 million, 2,500-square-foot Ruth R. Marder Center for Matisse Studies includes a dedicated exhibition space, a library and a study room.
Speaking with Hilarie M. Sheets of the Art Newspaper, museum director Christopher Bedford says, The idea is to be a brain trust, the throbbing heart of Matisse.
The BMA holds around 1,200 of Matisses paintings, sculptures and drawings. An exhibition now on view at the Maryland museumA Modern Influence: Henri Matisse, Etta Cone and Baltimoreexplores how the venue came to be such a center for the French artists work, reports Sebastian Smee for the Washington Post.
Etta Cone, the art collector referenced in the shows title, was a member of a prosperous German-Jewish family based in Baltimore. In 1906, Etta and her sister Claribel traveled to France, where they were impressed by an exhibition of work by Matisse and his artist friends, known as the Fauves, or wild beasts.
Katy Rothkopf, the centers new director and a curator at the museum, says she hopes the space will attract researchers from other museums and provide a venue for new projects.
Starting next summer, the center will host Denise Murrell, a curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as its first research fellow.

BMA commissioned artist Stanley Whitney to create a set of three large stained-glass windows to be installed in the center.
Whitney will also present an exhibition, Matisse: The Sinuous Line, which will open with the center. The show is the first installation in a two-part series.

The Matisse collection was first established when sisters Claribel and Etta Cone donated their artwork to the museum in 1949.
The Cone Collection has more than 600 works by Matisse, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and illustrated books.

In a peculiar twist of history, the Baltimore Museum of Art is home to what is widely believed to be the worlds largest and most comprehensive collection of work by Henri Matisse. That institution now hopes to become the epicenter of scholarship about the French artist, with the establishment of a center for the exhibition and study of his work that is slated to open in 2021, said Christopher Bedford, the museums director.
The museum has over 1,200 pieces by Matisse, many the result of a 1949 bequest by the Baltimore sisters and collectors Claribel and Etta Cone, who had amassed some 500 of his works, including the famous Blue Nude and Large Reclining Nude. The museum has since acquired more than 700 others.
Yves-Alain Bois, a Matisse expert, said the center could considerably expand the historical record of Matisses life and legacy, which, surprisingly, contains significant holes. Unlike Picasso, who really has been enormously studied, the bibliography on Matisse is not huge, he said.Certainly there is little written on the decade from, lets say, 1925 to 1935.

Baltimore Museum Of Art Exhibition Pays Tribute To The French Artist And His Most Ardent American Patron
Henri Matisse had no new paintings to show Etta Cone in 1933 when she visited him at his studio in Nice. He usually reserved a few canvases for her, since this devoted collector had been making annual trips to see him from her progressively cluttered apartment in Baltimore, Maryland. This time, he was taking a break from his easel after struggling for two years with The Yellow Dress . Cone knew this painting well, actually shed bought it the year before and hung it in her front room.
Matisse did not want to disappoint Cone, and so instead of new paintings he produced a customised tableau vivant: he had his model for The Yellow Dress return to the studio and wear the gown she had worn for the painting, seated in the same spot. Cone was thrilled by this very personal gesture, says Katy Rothkopf, the director of the Baltimore Museum of Arts Center for Matisse Studies and the co-curator of a new exhibition about the collectors relationship with the artist, titled A Modern Influence: Henri Matisse, Etta Cone and Baltimore.
This private moment between an artist and a collector, whose relationship spanned 43 years and a transatlantic expanse, is one of many shared in the show of around 160 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and illustrated books. Planned for several years, it anticipates the opening of the museums Ruth R. Marder Center for Matisse Studies this December.
Matisse Picasso And The School Of Paris: Masterpieces From The Baltimore Museum Of Art
Consisting of 64 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from The Baltimore Museum of Arts extensive collection, this rich exhibition explored the work of artists who made Paris the center of modern art and culture from the late 19th century until the outbreak of World War II. While 27 works by Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso form the core of the exhibition and give the show its name, signature works by predecessors Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Edgar Degas, and Paul Cézanne are also included. Surrealists Andre Masson, Joan Miró, and Max Ernst are also featured.
Many of the works in this exhibition come from the renowned collection of sisters Etta and Claribel Cone of Baltimore, who, in the early 20th century, amassed one of the most important art collections of their time, much of which came through their visits to the Paris studios of Matisse and Picasso.
This exhibition was organized and circulated by the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Large Reclining Nude
The Baltimore Museum of Art will soon be home to a dedicated Henri Matisse study center, making the most of the museums collection of 1,200 works by the French masterthe most in any public museum.
Set to open in 2021, the 3,400-square-foot center will be built on the museums first floor, and will hold rotating exhibitions of Matisses works on paper. Jay McKean Fisher, who was the museums chief curator until last summer, will be the centers founding director.
The museum already has a wing dedicated to Matisse, highlighting works donated by Claribel and Etta Cone in 1949. The Baltimore sisters, namesakes of the Cone Wing, left the museum some 500 works of art by Matisse as part of their bequest. Later gifts, including some by Matisses daughter, Marguerite Duthuit, and other members of the artists family, increased the museums Matisse holdings by about 700 works.

To build the facility, which will promote new Matisse scholarship efforts from visiting curators and academics, the museum has secured a $5 million donation from the local Ruth Carol Fund, established by the late Ruth R. Marder, a long-time museum supporter. Its tied to an anonymous 2007 donation to the institutions endowment for the second largest gift in museum history.
