In Arles, Gauguin made a portrait of Van Gogh painting one of these iconic still lifes. Through his many self-portraits we are very familiar with Van Goghs likeness. However Gauguins painting gives us a glimpse of how he saw the famous painter. Van Gogh once wrote about Gauguins portrait:
My face has lit up a lot since, but it was indeed me, extremely tired and charged with electricity as I was then.

Meaning Of The Sunflowers
The sunflower paintings had a meaning for Vincent. He wrote that they were an expression of his gratitude. His intention was to make art that offers solace to troubled hearts.
TriptychVincent wanted to hang two still lifes of sunflowers on either side of his portrait La Berceuse. Together, the paintings would form a triptych, a group of three paintings. In a letter, he described how he envisaged the combination.

A Sunflower Labyrinth At Van Gogh Museum

A labyrinth made of 125,000 sunflowers, all yellow and smiling at the sun, covered half of the Museumplein this weekend. The labyrinth was created by the Van Gogh museum to celebrate the opening of the new entrance hall.
It was a pleasure to wander through the flower maze and to discover the secret rooms with music and art! Do you want to have a walk with me?
Note: the maze was there only for the weekend! On Sunday, the flowers were given away to visitors.
Vincent Wanted To Be Known As The Painter Of Sunflowers
Just like other painters working at the time, Vincent made flower still lifes. But he did things a little differently. After practising with different flowers, he chose a specific variety: the sunflower. His fellow painters thought that sunflowers were perhaps somewhat coarse and unrefined. But this is exactly what Vincent liked, and he also enjoyed painting flowers that had gone to seed. He gave sunflowers the lead role in several paintings.
Vincent knew that his sunflower paintings were special. As did other people. After he died, friends brought sunflowers with them to his funeral. Sunflowers became synonymous with Vincent, just as he had hoped.

Van Gogh Museuma Bit Of History
Vincent van Gogh was very close to his younger brother Theo . And it was Theo who managed the artists estate as well as spreading the word about his work and keeping his memory alive. Unfortunately, he only lived for about a year after his brothers death. And so it fell to his widow Jo van Gogh-Bonger to carry on with this important work. But the Van Gogh Museum was actually founded by their son, Vincent Willem van Gogh , who had been named after his uncle. And its doors first opened in 1973.
The museum building was designed by renowned Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld. Despite spanning four floors, this main building soon wasnt big enough to cope with the crowds of visitors that flocked to the museum.
In 1999, Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa designed a new exhibition wing to expand the ever-popular museum. The same architect went on to design the stunning glass-fronted entrance hall that has connected the two parts of the museum since 2015.
The bulk of the collection belongs to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation, which is still represented by the Van Gogh family.

Sunflowers Friendship And Gratitude
Van Gogh began painting in late summer of 1888 and continued into the following year. One went to decorate his friend Paul Gauguin‘s bedroom. The paintings show sunflowers in all stages of life, from full bloom to withering. The paintings were considered innovative for their use of the yellow spectrum, partly because newly invented pigments made new colours possible.
In a letter to Theo, Vincent wrote:
“It’s a type of painting that changes its aspect a little, which grows in richness the more you look at it. Besides, you know that Gauguin likes them extraordinarily. He said to me about them, among other things:that … that’s… the flower. You know that Jeannin has the peony, Quost has the hollyhock, but I have the sunflower, in a way.”

A Leading Role For The Sunflower
Few artists were interested in sunflowers, which were considered ‘coarse’, inelegant plants. But, in Vincents opinion, that was what made them interesting. Moreover, he chose flowers that were withered and dead. And they werent neatly arranged in a vase either, but lying separately on the table.Vincent wasn’t the first to paint sunflowers, but he was one of the first who gave the flower the leading role in a number of floral still lifes.

Van Gogh Made Two Series Of Sunflower Paintings

The famous Sunflowers is actually the second series of sunflower paintings by the artist. There is an earlier series of four works, made during his years in Paris, that depict flowers lying on the ground. Paul Gaugin saw Van Goghs Parisian sunflowers and greatly admired them. He subsequently acquired two of the paintings and hung them above his bed in his apartment.

Van Gogh Early Paintings
For van Gogh, art was a spiritual occupation, which he discovered at the age of 27, in 1880. It was a means, Vincent believed, of bringing concentrated on drawing and took farmers as his subjects, experimenting with all kinds of media, such as pen, ink and black chalk. Van Goghs early oil paintings similarly used a very dark palette and led in 1885 to the, now so famous, Potato Eaters.

The Famous Series Was Used As Decoration

The famous series with sunflowers in a vase were initially painted as decoration for Paul Gaugins room in Arles. Van Gogh looked up to Gauguin, and decided to paint the series when Theo, his brother, finally persuaded Gauguin to join him in Arles. He did seven paintings in total, three of them are kept in different museums all over the world . Of the others, one belongs to a private collection and another was lost during World War II. There are also versions in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Sompo Japan Museum of Art in Tokyo.
Van Gogh’s ‘sunflowers’ Staying Put In Amsterdam Museum
AMSTERDAM A “full body scan” carried out on the Van Gogh Museum’s version of the Dutch master’s iconic “Sunflowers” has shown the painting is not fit to travel because it’s in “stable but vulnerable” condition, the museum’s director said Thursday.
“We’ve decided that any stresses that the picture could be subjected to were it to travel, were to be lent, that those might be too risky,” director Axel Rueger told The Associated Press in the studio where the painting is undergoing restoration. “So therefore we decided that from now on we will not be able to lend the picture any more to other exhibitions to other museums so it will always stay in Amsterdam.”
For Van Gogh fans who can’t make it to Amsterdam, the predominantly yellow 1889 painting of a bunch of sunflowers in a vase is based on another version of the work painted a year earlier that is on display at London’s National Gallery. Other versions of the work are in Philadelphia, Tokyo and Munich.
The painting in Amsterdam is hardly a frequent flyer it has only been loaned out six times, the last time to the National Gallery so it could hang next to that London museum’s version.
Ella Hendriks, who worked on the current restoration project, said the painting underwent a series of tests she likened to a “full body scan” on a human patient. The tests used precision imaging machines to peer through the surface and decide what could and could not be done to the painting.

Vincent Van Goghand His Self
One of Van Goghs favourite subjects? Himself, of course. Most people will have come across his self-portraits before. They are all somehow different with a common thread. Sompo Purchased Van Gogh’s ‘sunflowers’ In The 1980s It’s Being Sued Over The Painting By Descendants Of Its Former Owner
Sompo Holdings, a Japanese insurance company that owns Vincent Van Goghs Sunflowers, is being sued by heirs of the oil paintings former owner, claiming their relative was forced to sell the artwork under Nazi persecution.
In 1934, von Mendelssohn-Bartholdy allegedly consigned the 1889 Van Gogh painting to Parisian art dealer Paul Rosenberg and transferred its ownership to his non-Jewish wife Elsa in an attempt to prevent Nazi confiscation of the artwork. The banker, who died in 1935, relinquished the painting as one of many grave consequences of the racially exclusionary Nazi policies and concomitant coercion calculated to evict Jews from the economy and society of Germany, according to the lawsuit.
Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance, which became known as Sompo in 2010, purchased Sunflowers at a Christies auction in 1987 for almost $40 million, the highest-ever auction sale for a painting at that time.
Von Mendelssohn-Bartholdys heirs claim the insurance company has since profited from the artwork and incorporated it into Sompos corporate identity, despite being aware of its historical context.
In 2000, Sompo expressed concerns to the Art Institute of Chicago and Amsterdams von Gogh Museum over the paintings Nazi history, according to the lawsuit. Sunflowers remains on display at Sompos Tokyo museum.
