I highly recommend that everyone who has the opportunity visit the National Museum of African American History & Culture. As I said before, the African American experience is truly the American experience. While everything in the museum isnt easy to handle, that is what history is taking the good with the bad.

Another great thing about the museum there was such a wide selection of ethnic cultures and nationalities visiting. We heard a variety of languages being spoken around us so its wonderful that visitors from other countries are finding the museum such a great experience.

If you visit be sure to plan to spend all day there. We never made it to see every exhibit and Ive heard it can take two or three visits to see it all. I cant wait to return and learn even more!

How To Get Free Tickets To The National Museum Of African American History & Culture

The Smithsonians National Museum of African American History and Culture opened in September of 2016. It is an amazing museum that is worth a visit on on any trip to Washington, DC. That said, its still very new and very popular, so unlike other museums on the National Mall, you need a free ticket if you want to go. Its not difficult to get one but you will have to wake up early.

We visited a few years ago when my daughter was 5 and my son was 2. Back then, I read a picture book of Ruby Bridges story as an entry point to talk about segregation and inequality. We did not go to the History Galleries then.

For this visit, my kids are 8 and 5 and we talked more specifically about why we are visiting this time. We talked about the evils of slavery in broad terms and the history of inequality. I showed them the museums website ahead of time.

Opening Hours Of The Museum Of African American History In Washington Dc

The museum opens its doors to the public from 10am and closes at 5.30pm. To book your ticket on the day you can log on to the website from 6 am. You will receive your entrance pass in the post by 8 am at the latest.

Please note that you can only book entrance passes until 4pm, as no visitors are allowed after that time. Also, the exhibits begin to close at 5.15pm, so it’s best to keep an eye on your watch as you make your way around.

You can visit the museum at any time of the year because the only day it closes is 25 December. That’s why this is one of the best museums to visit in Washington.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture is a fascinating state-of-the-art building. Inside, you can take a tour through almost every aspect of African-American history. Each exhibit addresses African-American art, slavery, sports, the civil rights movement and much more.

Even looking at its exterior will surprise you, as it is made up of a three-tiered bronze screen. This is the work of Ghanaian architect David Adyaje and is a tribute to the iron work done by African-American slaves in the American South.

When you enter the museum you will probably be amazed at what you can find. However, there are certain exhibits that are not to be missed. One of them is the Musical Crossroads, which describes the history of African-American music from its origins. Here you will find the history of musical genres such as jazz and hip-hop.

Another must-see exhibition is Slavery and Freedom. In this section you will find first-person accounts and artefacts that tell the story of what was probably humanity’s worst episode. Likewise, Defending Freedom and A Changing America are exhibitions that highlight the struggle for civil rights, the activism and assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the mandates of Barack Obama. Construction Of The Museum Building

The museum’s groundbreaking ceremony took place on February 22, 2012. President Barack Obama and museum director Bunch were among the speakers at the ceremony. Actress Phylicia Rashd was the Master of Ceremonies for the event, which also featured poetry and music performed by Denyce Graves, Thomas Hampson, and the Heritage Signature Chorale.

Clark Construction Group, Smoot Construction, and H.J. Russell & Company won the contract to build the museum. The architectural firm of McKissack & McKissack provided project management services on behalf of the Smithsonian, and acted as liaison between the Smithsonian and public utilities and D.C. government agencies. Guy Nordenson and Associates and Robert Silman Associates were the structural engineers for the project.

The NAAMHC became the deepest museum on the National Mall. Excavators dug 80 ft below grade to lay the foundations, although the building itself will be only 70 ft deep. The museum is located at a low point on the Mall, and groundwater puts 27.78 psi on the walls. To compensate, 85 US gal per minute of water were pumped out every day during construction of the foundation and below-grade walls, and a slurry of cement and sand injected into forms to stabilize the site. Lasers continually monitored the walls during construction for any signs of bulging or movement.

The 350,000 sq ft building has a total of 10 stories .

How Much Do Tickets To The Museum Of African American History In Washington Dc Cost

You have no excuse not to visit this iconic museum, as admission is free, as it is a Smithsonian museum. However, you do need to book your ticket in advance. This booking process was taken since its inception, as the museum is usually very crowded.

Tickets are timed passes, i.e. your ticket is valid only at a specific time of the day. If you arrive late, your pass will not be valid and you will not be allowed entry. So it is best to be punctual. You can also tour the entire museum until closing time, at approximately 17:30.

On the other hand, I recommend you book your ticket in advance, as there are a limited number of passes available each day, so you’d better be cautious! Plan your trip to the Washington DC Museum of African American History well in advance. You can book up to 30 days before your visit.

Only 6 passes are allowed per person. However, if you are travelling with a group of more than 10 people, I recommend booking a group pass. These tickets are issued at 8am. If you schedule your visit on the same day, if passes are available, you will be able to watch online from 8.15am.

Tickets Required March Through August

Timed-entry passes will remain in effect for entry between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. during the months of March through August on both weekdays as well as weekends year-round. However, after 1 p.m. on weekdays, visitors can enter without a timed-entry pass weekend visitors will still have to have timed-entry passes throughout the day. The difference between the off-peak months and the peak March to August season is that museum visitors arriving in the spring and summer months will still need to obtain a timed-entry pass to explore NMAAHC before 1 p.m on weekdays.

If Sensitive Kids 2 Options For The History Galleries:

There are 2 great options if you have sensitive kiddos for going through the galleries. The first option, which we did when the kids were younger, was to skip the 3 below ground History Galleries. This covers the years 1400-present day. The 3 above ground Culture Galleries are great for kids

The other option, which we took this time, is to move quickly through the History Galleries. The museum has a red box over particularly difficult/sensitive material which you can see from afar and not go up close and read.

When you first exit the elevator the first exhibit is entitled 15th 19th centuries: The Making of the Atlantic World. It has a beautiful picture of Queen Nzingha Mbande of present day northern Angola. This reminds you of the history and culture prior to the transatlantic slave trade. The next spot we stopped at was the Paradox of Liberty which talks about the Declaration of Independence and the 12 of the first 18 presidents who owned slaves. There is a shackles artifact right next to the statue of Thomas Jefferson. He owned 609 slaves in his lifetime which are represented by bricks surrounding his statute.
