Mill Pond Card & Gift Co Reviews

Lincoln museum, presidential library to reopen Wednesday

Amazing product selection and customer service. I was able to purchase a confirmation gift with ease on their ecommerce site and pick it up only a couple hours afterwards. It was the only store in my area that did confirmation themed gifts and through that I found that they offered a ton of gifts for all occasions. A great local gem!

I was looking for special birthday cards and was thrilled that I could create my own personalized cards. Thank you Suzanne for your help and for delivering them to my front door!!

Such an awesome place for buying a gift. Also, the staff is very well-mannered and amazing.

Besides learning all there is to know about the 16th president, youll gain an understanding of the times and the sentiment of the people.

A portal to the past, the Journey 2 section takes you through Lincolns White House years and examines the personal tragedies as well as the political difficulties the Lincolns endured during this time.

There was much debate surrounding the Emancipation Proclamation. Does it go too far? Or doesnt it go far enough?

As families lost loved ones on the battlefield during the Civil War, the Lincolns endured their own loss at home. Willie, their 11-year-old son, died on February 20, 1862, after becoming ill with typhoid fever.

It took an obvious toll on both of them, but especially Mary Todd. No one would have predicted shed be going through that unimaginable grief again a few years later. She was sitting next to her husband in the box at Fords Theatre when he was shot in the head by John Wilkes Booth.

What Are They Wearing In Washington

In the White House Blue Room, Mary Lincoln is being fitted for a ball gown by her dressmaker, Elizabeth Keckley. Around the room are exact reproductions of the ball gowns of Marys social rivals, who all seem to be younger, thinner, richer and more popular than Mary. Each of these women has something nasty and cruel to say about Mary. More…

For The Engaging Special Effects Shows

Do not miss the two shows offered at the museum. I repeat, do not miss the shows!

At Union Theatre, Lincolns Eyes gives a unique perspective of his life with special effects and dramatic state-of-the-art theatrics.

Its hard for me to describe because Ive never seen anything quite like it. There are multiple projection screens and delightful storytelling that will keep you engaged from start to finish through the 17-minute production.

In the Holavision Theater is another interesting presentation, the Ghosts of the Library. A live performer combined with smoke, vapors, optical illusions, and holograms create a magical account of why its important to learn about history and the artifacts left behind.

The show is only 9 minutes long but it does an incredible job explaining how the past and present are connected.

Debate Over Exhibit Design And Education Of History

Abraham Lincoln 6

The museum has sparked debate within the field of museum design and among historians for its use of theatrics and inaccurate reproductions to tell the Lincoln story. Public response has been positive, delivering larger than expected attendance, enthusiastic visitors and a boost to the regional economy, including increased attendance at surrounding historical attractions.

However, museum traditionalists have disapproved of this departure from the display and interpretation of real artifacts.Southern Illinois University Carbondale historian John Y. Simon have said the museums approach, which borrows presentation technologies from entertainment, trivializes the subject matter. Suggesting that it is more like a theme park than a museum, Simon called the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum a Six Flags Over Lincoln and architecture critic Blair Kamin referred to it as Lincoln Land.

Other academics applaud the Lincoln Museums approach. John R. Decker wrote in the Journal of American History:

Like any other modern collection has an audience base that extends far beyond specialists and academics. Rather than merely pandering to the public or dumbing down history, the ALPLM intelligently and compellingly uses visual culture to meet its mission as a public pedagogical institution. The museum addresses complex historical material and opens the historical discourse to a wider audience than would be possible through more conventional means.

Now in its second edition, this highly rated book by a Lincoln assassination expert takes to task the long-held notion that Dr. Samuel A. Mudd was a poor, innocent doctor who was sent to prison for setting the broken leg of an assassin that he did not recognize. For years, historians have fought to overcome family efforts to ignore known facts. This book sets the record straight about Dr. Mudds activities on slave patrols, in the Confederate underground resistance in Southern Maryland, his repeated contacts with John Wilkes Booth, and more.

Realizing that the Confederacy was losing the war, Dr. Luke Blackburn decided in 1864-65 to attempt a yellow fever epidemic in the North by spreading contaminated clothing from victims in Bermuda. Blackburn was a Confederate sympathizer with experience in the field of infectious diseases. His plot was to include President Abraham Lincoln. Did it work? Read the book it is based on historical records, documents, and factual accounts.

At the end of most museum trips, visitors meander through the museum gift shop, allowing their eyes to dance over Gustav Klimt scarves, Abraham Lincoln bobbleheads, or environmentally themed crystal growing kits in the childrens toy section. Museum gift shops also often sell books relating to their collections, especially in history and art museums. What would happen if each museum visitor viewed the gift shop space as more than a fun commercial zone at the end of the museum trip? How can visitors reimagine a museums gift shop as an extension of the museums exhibition space?
