Director of Marketing, Communications and Guest Services, National World War I Museum and Memorial

KANSAS CITY, MO. The National WWI Museum and Memorial will reopen to its members on Monday, June 1 and to the general public on Tuesday, June 2.

We have monitored the COVID-19 situation closely during the past few months and, in accordance with guidance from public health officials at the local, state and federal levels, we are ready to reopen Americas official WWI Museum and Memorial, said Dr. Matthew Naylor, National WWI Museum and Memorial President and CEO. Weve spent considerable time developing a comprehensive reopening plan that allows for people to visit one of the worlds great museums and memorials in a safe and welcoming environment.

Upon reopening, several elements of the Museum and Memorial will be adjusted to account for guidelines established by public health officials. Among those items:

The experience of walking through the Museum, seeing the exhibitions and spending time looking though the materials and information we offer will remind visitors about the passion, strength and resilience humankind is capable of, Naylor said. The world was devastated by the Great War, compounded by the pandemic of 1918, yet re-emerged. We can look to the past to gain an understanding that we have the capacity to get through this and quite possibly emerge stronger than before.

This museum is the only one in the U.S. with exhibits, artifacts and educational narrative that expands the comprehensive history of WW I with an expansive collection of artifacts including such things as a Renault FT-17 tank, uniforms, guns, medical kits, dining utensils, photos, maps, propaganda posters. A life-size replica of trenches are used to engage visitors in stories. Multiple interactive displays, stories and photos have been reproduced in large format for easy reading and view. It includes a research center and a library with a notable, extensive collection of archived documents. It is our favorite venue for out-of-state visitors of all ages because they consistently regard the activity as a highlight of their visit. Throughout the year, the museum hosts guest lecturers, exhibitions, plays and films related to World War I. The museum is designed artfully with a contemporary and inviting welcome inside via a transparent glass walkway that rises over a field of brilliantly red poppies. Soon after World War I ended, Kansas City leaders formed the Liberty Memorial Association to create a lasting monument to the men and women who had served in the war. In 1919, the LMA and citizens of Kansas City raised more than $2.5 million in just 10 days. The equivalent of more than $35 million today, this staggering accomplishment reflected the passion of public sentiment for the Great War that had dramatically changed the world.

In 1921, more than 100,000 people gathered to see the supreme Allied commanders dedicate the site of the Liberty Memorial. This was the first time in history these five leaders were together in one place.

Construction on the classical Egyptian Revival-style monument was completed in 1926 and the Liberty Memorial was dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge in front of more than 150,000 people.

It has not been raised to commemorate war and victory, but rather the results of war and victory which are embodied in peace and liberty. Today I return in order that I may place the official sanction of the national government upon one of the most elaborate and impressive memorials that adorn our country. The magnitude of this memorial, and the broad base of popular support on which it rests, can scarcely fail to excite national wonder and admiration.

Wichita As Air Capital Of The Worldamanda Reichenberger

In 1944 a take-off or landing occurred every 90 seconds at the Wichita Municipal Airport. Kansas became the center of the aviation machine. The Chamber of Commerce declared Wichita as the Air Capital of the World as early as 1928. General Henry Arnold, William Knudsen, and other U.S. air effort officials visited Wichita in August of 1940 to see if the Air Capital was all it claimed to be. These skeptics left Wichita satisfied and endorsed the Air Capital as the primary location of B-29 production.

The airline industry really began to boom when the Stearman Company, which became a division of the Boeing Company in 1938, delivered their first military airplanes, four U.S. Army YPT-9s, in March 1931. These four airplanes would evolve into a long line of more than 8,600 primary trainers produced through 1943. When Stearman Aircraft became the Wichita division of The Boeing Airplane Company in 1941, it began to build the B-29 Superfortress. Boeing Wichita produced 1,664 B-29s during World War II, providing the U.S. with major air force.

The United States of America relied on Kansas for aviation support and that air support was widely achieved through the efforts made in Kansas. Thanks to the Air Capital, the U.S. gained thousands of planes and much needed air support throughout WWII. The war was fought with the combined efforts of every individual and every state, but Kansas had an advantage: it had wings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.

The National WWI Museum and Memorial has reopened Liberty Memorial Tower Wednesday, and the Edward Jones Research Center will be open again on Monday, after more than a year of being closed due to COVID-19.

The Museum and Memorial closed to the public on March 16, 2020, for 11 weeks and, while many of its operations reopened on June 2, 2020, the Tower and Research Center have remained closed.Throughout the last year, we have meticulously followed the recommendations of public health officials in order to keep our guests, volunteers and staff safe, said Dr. Matthew Naylor, National WWI Museum and Memorial President and CEO. We are thrilled that we can now safely reopen the Tower and our guests can take in the downtown skyline from this historic location.

The 217-foot-tall Liberty Memorial Tower will remain open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week.

Tickets can be purchased online or on-site, and visitors have the option of purchasing discounted combo tickets that include Museum and Memorial admission.

Due to the popularity of the Tower, guests should plan to visit the Tower early in their visit to the Museum and Memorial. There will be modified elevator protocols due to COVID-19.

The Edward Jones Research Center will reopen on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31. Ongoing hours will be Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Other Things To Know Before You Visit The National World War I Museum

Tickets are $18 per adult and $10 per child over 6. You can buy your tickets online or purchase them at the front desk when you enter. Once you are inside, you are given a visitors guide with highlights the exhibits being showcased and a map of where everything is located. There is a cafeteria with plenty of food options, a museum store, and elevators for those who need it or are traveling with strollers. Once again, I really wouldnt advise this museum for toddlers or young children under 7. I dont think they will get too much out of it, but in case you happen to be traveling with one and have older kids, they should enjoy completing the kids activity booklet.

Kansas City was just one of the many cities we visited on our road trip. It was a three-week drive from Connecticut, across to Nebraska, down to Texas, across to Florida, and then back up the East Coast. We stayed busy with road trip activities, songs, and podcasts. Although we did move fast, our family really enjoyed seeing new sites along the way. Here is a list of some of our previous trip itineraries, and how we create a personalized travel map for each state we visit.

World War I Museum Pays Tribute To An Often

via the KCUR Public Radio System station web site

Pvt. Henry Johnson, a Harlem Hellfighter and World War I hero, was denied recognition by the U.S. military until decades after his death. For Veterans Day, a mural at Kansas Citys World War I Museum and Memorial immortalizes Johnsons story.

Two stern portraits of Army Sgt. Henry Johnson gaze across the east and west corridors of the National World War I Museum and Memorial.

At first, Johnsons floor-to-ceiling portrait looks like one giant photograph. But as you move closer, the faces of thousands of individuals reveal themselves from within.

Its through these photos 3,500, to be exact that the Museum and Memorial tells not just the story of Johnson but the story of all American service members this Veterans Day.

Service without recognition

Shortly after midnight on May 15, 1918, Johnson stood guard at his post at the edge of the Argonne Forest in France, when he came under attack by German snipers.

The 26-year-old Army private sent his sentry partner, Pvt. Needham Roberts, to alert the troops serving under French command. Then he started hurling grenades toward the sound of the wire cutters.

Roberts didnt get far he was struck by the Germans own grenades.

Johnson ran to Roberts aid, suffering gunshots from the descending German raiding party. After his rifle jammed, Johnson used the gun as a club. When that shattered, he used a bolo knife to fend off the attackers.

Kansas City, Missouri

For reasons too old to matter, Kansas City became the site of Americas World War I memorial . Three years after the war ended the city built a 217-foot-tall tower topped with an eternal flame, and in its base was a museum. It had a walk-thru replica trench and lots of dusty weapons, but in the 1990s it was closed for safety reasons. The World War I Museum, like the war, might have faded into obscurity.

Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crowfollows the end of the Civil War to the end of World War I, highlightingthe central role played by African Americans in advocating for their rights. It examinesthe depth and breadth of opposition to Black advancement, including how Jim Crow permeated the North. Through art, artifacts, photographs and media, the exhibition highlights these transformative decades in American historyand their continued relevance today.

New-York Historical Society, Gift of George H. Dean

African Americans embraced their newly acquired citizenship and took seriously their long-denied rights and responsibilities. Black men voted in large numbers and ran for office. Men and women joined patriotic clubs and local branches of the Republican Party. Black participation in local elections and state constitutional conventions created the first interracial governments in the United States. This demonstration of black citizenship aroused deep hostility among those who had only a few years earlier held African Americans as slaves.

The National WWI Museum and Memorials collection began in 1920 and is the most diverse in the world. While there are still many objects and documents from around the world that would enhance our collection, many of the most commonly-found objects and documents associated with World War I may no longer be needed for the collection.
