A Look at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans

The attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941, may have been the final straw that brought America in the war. From there, America was fighting a war on two fronts the European and the Pacific. The Road to Tokyo exhibit takes you through the island-hopping battles of American troops across the Pacific. It was a long road, and as we learn from movies and history books, it was full of challenges.

Once again, the personal stories and artifacts tell the story of the road to Tokyo in such a way, that you won’t soon forget. Take your time and absorb as much as you can.

Relation To New Orleans

The museum closed for three months after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans on August 29, 2005, re-opening on December 3 of that year. A museum banner promoted the re-opening by proclaiming “We Have Returned,” a phrase made famous by General Douglas MacArthur regarding his eventual return to the Philippines in 1944.

As of 2015, the museum is in the midst of a $400 million capital expansion campaign called The Road to Victory: A Vision for Future Generations. The expansion has resulted in significant increases in attendance. The Solomon Victory Theater, Stage Door Canteen, and American Sector restaurant opened in November 2009. The John E. Kushner Restoration Pavilion opened in June 2011. The US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center opened to the public in 2013, followed by the opening of the first phase of the Campaigns of Courage pavilion in 2014. The second phase of the Campaigns of Courage Pavilion, Road to Tokyo, opened in 2015. The final project in the expansion will be the Liberation Pavilion. Initially, the intended date of completion of the expansion project was 2015, but ground has not yet been broken on the final pavilion.

Visitation at the museum continues to grow, with 406,251 in 2010 having grown to nearly 700,000 in fiscal year 2016.

The Arsenal Of Democracy

This section of the museum is devoted to the war outside of the battlefields. Gathering Storm tells the saga of the geopolitical tensions that preceded the war, and explains how fascism was the ideological engine of the Axis cause. A House Divided goes into the deep domestic divisions that split Americans between isolationists and interventionists. Other exhibitions explore the massive mobilization of resources that was required to fight a war on two fronts on opposite sides of the world. United but Unequal is a particularly powerful gallery that explores the racial tensions on the American homefront even while fighting ethnic nationalists, the American military was segregated, and Japanese American civilians were rounded up into internment camps.

A Pivotal Local Connection

The Higgins boat in the atrium gives a clue to the museum’s origin and location. During World War II, the Navy needed a shallow-draft landing vessel to bring soldiers ashore for combat. New Orleans-based Andrew Higgins had been building similar boats to navigate Louisiana’s shallow bayous, and modified his design for battle. By war’s end, Higgins local factories produced more than 20,000 of the essential landing craft, inspiring Dwight Eisenhower to declare him, the man who won World War II for us. The museum’s Bayou to Battlefield exhibit details Higgins important contribution to the war effort.

University of New Orleans professor and author Stephen Ambrose’s 1995 book on D-Day inspired him to found the National D-Day Museum, which opened in New Orleans in 2000 with a single building. Since then, the museum’s mission has expanded to encompass all of the war, with Congress officially designating it as the National WWII Museum in 2004. The campus continues to expand as well, with a sixth building, the Liberation Pavilion , currently under construction.

The Campaigns Of Courage

The museum is divided into several pavilions, themselves subdivided into different sections, but the main draw for most visitors are the two Campaigns of Courage exhibits, which focus on the European and Pacific theaters of the war respectively, the Road to Berlin and the Road to Tokyo. The museums focus is aimed at American involvement in the war, and while some exhibition space discusses other Allied nations, the contributions of these countries is cast as strictly supporting the main American narrative.

Highlights from the Road to Berlin include a recreation of the Tunisian desert, which includes sand, gravel, an actual 1943 jeep and a 105mm Howitzer. In another room youll enter the wintry Ardennes forest, the backdrop for an exhibit on the Battle of the Bulge, which precedes the bombed out cityscapes of Cologne and Hamburg during the final push into Nazi Germany.

The Road to Tokyo includes a shark-faced P-40 Warhawk aircraft, a recreation of the bridge of the USS Enterprise, where visitors can learn about the naval combat and island hopping of the Pacific campaign, and a recreated jungle of towering palms meant to evoke the battlefields of Guadalcanal.

The National WWII Museum in New Orleans is one of the largest museums devoted solely to WWII. There are 5 primary campuses with more auxiliary campuses. Each one is filled with artifacts and stories told by those that lived through it. I was shocked and some of the documents, plans, and other artifacts shown in the museum. Each exhibit mixed artifacts, written descriptions, audio, and video with personal accounts of service members.

The two most impressive works are the Campaigns of Courage: European And Pacific Theaters, showcasing the Road to Berlin, and Road to Tokyo exhibits. Both of these are immersive exhibits, traveling through the war battle by battle all the way to the final mission and surrender.

The Dog Tag Experience

One way to keep your kids entertained is by having them register for a set of Dog Tags. Instead of having them printed with your name and info, youll follow another person through World War II. When you get to a Kiosk, they can scan their tag and hear that persons story. There are men and women to choose from, service members from every branch, and every ethnicity. Theyll find someone to relate to. These interactive exhibits require users to read a Covid 19 Restriction.

There are some museums you come across and will never forget. For me, it was the National World War II museum. Never before have I seen so a large collection of artifacts artfully mixed with displays and personal stories in one place before. This museum cannot be contained in one building. Instead, there are over 5 different campuses. Trying to see it all can be intimidating. Im sharing some of my National WWII Museum tips for families.

The WWII Museum wasnt even on my radar until my nephew mentioned it. This was the one thing he wanted to do, as opposed to mine which was Cafe du Monde Beignets. Learn How Science Won The War

The STEM Innovation Gallery is a unique exhibit geared toward kids. It was neat to walk through the development process of how science was used to overcome various problems. For example, the US Navy needed engines for their PT Boats and they needed them quickly. The solution was to repurpose an old World War I plane engine and train the crews how to use it as a boat engine. The STEM Innovation Gallery has several displays that talk about the challenge and solution.

There’s also a place where kids can learn about aircraft lift, bombsights and more. Don’t miss this section of the museum if your kids are with you.

When the Allies began to close in on Germany in late 1944 and early 1945, the Nazis forced the surviving prisoners on long marches to camps believed to be out of the way of the advancing enemy armies. Hundreds of thousands died of exposure, violence, and starvation on these death marches. As the Allied armies moved into Germany and Poland, they liberated the concentration and extermination camps, and witnesses to these sceneswar reporters and military personnelwere horrified by what they found. The world already knew the Germans were gassing, or working to death, Jews and other ethnic victims in these camps. Escaped prisoners had reported conditions to the media and to government officials in the United Kingdom and the United States. 75h anniversary of D-Day at National WWII Museum in New Orleans

Look through the pavilions glass to witness the restoration of WWII artifacts in progress.

Currently under restoration is a Higgins Industries PT boat, PT-305 that was built in New Orleans and saw service in the Mediterranean theater.

When restoration is complete the patrol torpedo boat PT-305 will be launched into her home waters of Lake Pontchartrain.

Following two to three months of testing, PT 305 will be moved to a custom-built boathouse and opened to the public.

Daily showtimes start at 10:00 am and run hourly until 4:00 pm. On Friday and Saturday, the last showing time is 5:00 pm.

On the second floor, you will find the Merchant Marine Gallery, a 940-square-foot gallery honoring civilian merchant mariners.

Final Mission: The Uss Tang Submarine Experience

Step aboard the most successful submarine in WWII history and relive its final mission.

Showtimes begin at 9:35 am and run at 15, 35, and 55 after the hour until 4:35 pm.

On Fridays and Saturdays, shows are at 4:55 pm, 5:15 pm, and 5:35 pm will also be available.

You must purchase it as an add-on to your general admission ticket. Purchasing tickets in advance for the USS Tang is highly recommended.

While US strategy in 1941 was largely focused on the war in Europe, the bold carrier raid seized the initiative against increasing US pressure over Japans ongoing war in China. Captain Rick Jacobs will discuss the events of that terrible, heroic dayfrom the opening of Japan by Commodore Mathew Perry in the 1850s through the devastation at Pearl Harbor on December 7.

Campaigns Of Courage Pavilion

The Campaigns of Courage pavilion has 19 galleries that takes you through the history and life of the European and Pacific theaters. As you progress, there are videos, displays and experiences that offer an immersive look at what was going on. Unlike many museums that simply have artifacts on display, it feels like youre walking through the snow during the Battle of the Bulge and get a chance to look through the German gun ports along Normandy beach. There is also an interactive experience where you can follow along in a soldiers footsteps through the war.

The most impressive experience was Beyond All Boundaries, a 4D experience produced and narrated by Tom Hanks. The showing takes viewers on a journey through the war with special effects and personal accounts. Imagine watching a squadron of B17s on a bombing run over Germany and a full size replica appears over the audience, fighting its way through the flak and fighters over Germany. Your seat is shaking and it feels like youre right in the thick of it all.

The museum also invites WWII veterans to come and talk about their experiences and answer questions. Its quite an experience to stand and listen to a personal account of the war and what they went through during that time. We heard many antidotes about what day to day life was like and it made us really appreciate their service and better understand what each individual went through to serve our country.
