The enchanting Van Gogh experience that wowed Paris and Toronto is debuting concurrently at different cities in the United States this summer, including Los Angeles and New York City. Like the previous shows, the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit in NYC will feature state-of-the-art digital projections of the Dutch Post-Impressionist’s sunflowers, self-portraits, and landscapes on the walls, floors, and ceilings.
Accompanying the numerous images will be a classical music soundtrack made by Italian composer Luca Longobardi. The music does not overpower’ the images but, on the contrary, allows a diverse approach to them, one that is more personal and intimate, he says. Music like soundscapes or even very famous tracks like Edith Piaf’s Non, je ne Regrette Rien recall that involuntary memory that allows people to generate new and specific attachments to the experience, a new madeleine moment. Additionally, there will be virtual reality experiences for visitors interested in learning about the background of Van Gogh’s most iconic paintings.

Van Gogh did not let his institutionalization interfere with his love of painting en plein air. Often, he would paint in the asylum’s garden, where he found an abundance of plants and flowers, including irises.
In 1889, he painted his most well-known painting of these flowers. Titled Irises, this painting was most likely intended as a simple study. However, in 1987, this unassuming work became the most expensive painting ever when it was sold to a private collector for $53.9 million. Two years later, it was purchased by the J. Paul Getty Museum, where it remains today.

This painting is one of two commemorating Van Goghs self-mutilation, though this was the first one he did after returning from the hospital. Hes seen bundled up as if his studio lacked heatwhich, given Van Goghs chronic poverty, was a distinct possibility. In the background you can see a ukiyo-e woodblock print hung on the wall, which speaks to Van Goghs fascination with Japanese art.

Starry Night Over the Rhône,’ 1888
Van Gogh painted Starry Night Over the Rhône less than one month after completing Café Terrace at Night. Again, he opted to paint outdoors this time, however, he left the bustling city center behind and settled along the banks of the Rhône River. From here, he could see gas lamps across the water, which echoed the twinkling sight of the stars overheard.
Much like his other nocturnes, Starry Night Over the Rhône illustrates Van Gogh’s inherent interest in color, from the aquamarine sky to the mauve ground. Though luminous tones and energetic brushstrokes fill the scene with energy, the scene is exceptionally calma far cry from the swirling Starry Night he’d paint the following year.
Today, Starry Night Over the Rhône is part of the Musée d’Orsays permanent collection.

Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat
Vincent van Goghs work is in such high demand for exhibitions around the world that its rare to find 16 of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts paintings by the Dutch master at home together in New York at one time. But now, for the first time in four years, the Mets full set of Van Gogh canvases from the department of European paintings are on view at the museum in galleries 822 and 825.
In the spring, Van Goghs Oleanders returned from a three-venue showing of Van Gogh & Japan, held in Sapporo, Tokyo, and Kyoto. Our LArlésienne was among the highlights of the Amsterdam venue, which just closed at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in late June, said Susan Stein, the Mets curator of 19th-century European painting, in an email to artnet News.

Closer to home, Stein added, Van Goghs Irises and Sunflowers were included in the Mets exhibition Public Parks, Private Gardens: Paris to Provence, where they enjoyed their place in a gallery that traced the revival of flower painting in late 19th-century France.

In 1886, Van Gogh moved to Paris, where he would meet artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Signac and Paul Gauguin, and where he would eventually produce some 200 paintings. But even by then, Van Gogh was a mess: He drank heavily, ate poorly, and had been hospitalized back in Antwerp, supposedly for treatment of syphilis among other ailments. He quarreled with brother Theo, with whom he lived, and after two years of being in Paris, decided that he had enough of the city. Debilitated by too much drinking and smoking, Van Gogh decamped for Arles in the South of France in 1888 with the aim of starting an artist colony. He rented a home he called the Yellow House, which he also christened the Studio of the South with the hope of attracting other artists to Arlesespecially Gauguin, whom Van Gogh repeatedly entreated to join him. Arles was also where Van Gogh forged his signature style out of a range of sources that included Japanese Prints, Impressionism and Pointillism. The Night Café is a case in point: A scene of a bar interior, its painted in clashing colors to convey the seediness of the place, which was known as a favorite hangout for vagrants and prostitutes.

Vincent Van Gogh Head Of A Skeleton With A Burning Cigarette 1886
Van Gogh moved from his native Holland to Antwerp, Belgium in 1885 to attend classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts . Who Owns Starry Night
During the late Theo’s life, his widow owned the Starry Night twice. Theo inherited everything his brother van Gogh had ever painted after the artist died in 1890. Johanna Gezina van Gogh-Bonger inherited Starry Night, along with dozens of other paintings, after her husband died in the fall of 1891.

In light of the current surge of COVID cases in New York City, effective today, Tuesday, December 21, The Met will reduce visitor capacity, and starting Thursday, December 23, dining will be closed.Masks and proof of vaccination remain required.

Babies dont develop stereoscopic vision for the first few months of their life they have a hard time perceiving depth and dimensions, and therefore gravitate to swirling shapes and bright colors. They and others with similar taste will find great pleasure in our cultures latest virally transmitted spectacles, which distill fin-de-siècle French painting into an amusement as captivating as a nursery mobile.
Vincent van Gogh, his corpse moldering in Auvers-sur-Oise and his paintings out of copyright, has these past few years been dragooned into a new sort of immersive exhibition that reproduces his churning paintings of Provence as wall-filling animated projections you may have seen them on Instagram, or on a Netflix indignity called Emily in Paris. The Franco-Dutch artist has always been a huge box-office draw , but a touring exhibition of paintings takes years and costs millions, and reputable museums dont lend their works to a for-profit enterprise.
What a few entrepreneurial exhibitionists figured out is that many of us are less attached to van Goghs paintings than to the mythology that surrounds them. And that you can exhibit for cheap.

Egyptian Art And Cultural Artifacts
Another rich collection thats a crowd-pleaser is the Mets compilation of amazing Egyptian art and artifacts.
So after browsing the European art, we beetled over to see the Egyptian art at the Met.
The museum contains a whopping number of ancient Egyptian statues and artifacts , displayed chronologically over 39 rooms.
We were interested to discover that many of the artifacts were collected when the Met sponsored several archaeological expeditions to Egypt in the early 1900s.
At the time, Egypt gave concessions to foreign institutions to excavate various sites.
This was based on the understanding that half of what was found would go to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The excavators could keep the other half.
And so the Met Museum acquired a splendid Egyptian collection!

With the excitement of a christening and with security precautions elaborate enough to satisfy a bank, the Metropolitan Museum of Art yesterday began unpacking 146 paintings and drawings by Vincent van Gogh.
The commotion – the opening of giant wooden crates, the anxious scrutiny of canvases worth many millions of dollars, the arrival of couriers bearing locked aluminum suitcases filled with drawings cradled in Styrofoam – was all part of the preparations for an exhibition of the artist’s work, which will run from Oct. 18 through Dec. 30.
The show will consist of many of the world’s most valuable paintings, and is the museum’s largest display ever of works by one of the most popular painters in history. Emotions Are High
”It will be a revelation to everyone,” said Philippe de Montebello, the director of the museum. ”The exhibition will reveal a number of aspects about an artist whom everybody thinks they know. You will see that you don’t just have a madman in a field splashing paint on a canvas, you have a highly cultivated, well- read, rational artist who really thought through and developed his ideas cerebrally.”
The drawings that van Gogh made in Arles, many of them sepia ink on paper, will be among the highlights of the exhibition, according to Mr. de Montebello. ”They are not merely sketches,” he said. ”They are complete works of art, rich and warm and sensational.” Clues to Artist’s Growth
