About The Oakland Museum Womens Board

Early History

The Oakland Museum Womens Board was organized in 1955 as a support group of The Oakland Museum Association . Its purpose was to serve as a women’s auxiliary for the three existing Oakland museums: the Oakland Art Museum, the Snow Museum, and the Oakland Public Museum.

In its early years, OMWB members worked diligently to increase membership and sponsor fundraising events. When the need for a new multi-discipline museum became apparent, OMWB members were instrumental in helping to pass the 1961 bond issue to build the Oakland Museum of California which opened at Tenth and Oak streets in September 1969.

The White Elephant Sale

In 2014, the OMWB contracted with three prominent Bay Area artists Vogue, Ernest Doty and Griffin One to paint an aerosol mural on the Derby Avenue side of its 333 Lancaster Street warehouse. Owned by the OMWB, the warehouse is the site of their annual White Elephant Sale. The mural shows the Boards pride in Oakland and its Jingletown neighborhood. The huge mural fills the entire side of the building from ground to roofline and is approximately 240 feet long and 30 feet high, encompassing 7,200 square feet. Showing a theme of nature blending into the urban landscape, it features several prominent characters, including a White Elephant with its trunk raised high. Iconic Bay Area animals and plants are also shown.

Spanish And Mexican Eras

In 1772, the area that later became Oakland was colonized, along with the rest of California, by Spanish settlers for the King of Spain. In the early 19th century, the Spanish crown granted the East Bay area to Luis María Peralta for his Rancho San Antonio. The Oakland Unified School District , which covers the city except for Sheffield Village, operates most of Oakland’s public schools. Due to financial troubles and administrative failures, it was in receivership by the state of California from 2002 to 2008. As of 2015, the Oakland Unified School District includes 86 division-run schools and 32 charter schools the district also manages several adult education programs. As of 2015 there are 48,181 K12 students among division-run schools, there are 4,600 plus employees.

OUSD test scores historically lag behind the rest of California, in particular due to a high proportion of English-language learners. Some individual schools have much better performance than the citywide average. Oakland Museum Awarded Nation’s Highest Museum And Library Honor For The First Time

The Oakland Museum of California is one of six recipients of the 2022 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, museum officials announced this week.

For the past 28 years, the Institute of Museum and Library Services has awarded the medal in recognition of institutions that have had outstanding contributions to their communities.

This is OMCA’s first national medal and is the highest honor to be given to museums and libraries in the nation.

Nominated by U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, OMCA was selected from 30 finalists for going beyond the accustomed levels of service that museum and libraries provide, demonstrating leadership of social impact on their local communities.

Museum Director and CEO Lori Fogerty attributes much of the achievement to the longstanding educational programs offered at the museum, as well as their work partnering with community organizations. Friday Nights, launched in 2013, is just one example of the programs, pulling the community together through its weekly programming of meals and performances from local vendors and artists.

“We created the museum as a civic space, as a town square,” Fogerty said, “It broadened our audience considerably. We started getting many more families with young children, and it gave us a way to engage with a lot more partners. We partnered with a lot of performing arts organizations.”
