A museum in Seoul, South Korea has declined a request to return a group of 63 works by Russian avant-garde artists on loan from the Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts in Russia. It is the latest tension to arise between international cultural institutions and their counterparts in Russia following the countrys war on Ukraine.

The traveling exhibition for which the works were loaned, Kandinsky, Malevich & Russian Avant-Garde, is currently at its final stop in Korea at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, after going on view throughout Europe at the end of December. It will remain open as scheduled until April 17, according to the Korea Times, which first reported the news.

Similar situations have arisen across Europe since Russia launched its war on Ukraine in late February.

In Milan, more than 20 works were loaned to a museum owned by Italian bank Intesa Sanpaolo from the Russian state-backed network of Hermitage museums for an exhibition tilted Grand Tour: The dream of Italy from Venice to Pompeii. Additionally, two paintings were loaned to the citys Palazzo Reale for its Titian and the image of women in 16th century Venice exhibition. Russias Ministry of Culture requested the return of those works and others in elsewhere in Italy, which those institutions have acquiesed to.

North Americas only museum dedicated to preserving Russian art is housed in a former Spanish Colonial-style church just off 35W in South Minneapolis. Originally located in Bloomington, The Museum of Russian Art was founded in 2002 to showcase the acquisitions of art dealer Raymond E. Johnson and his wife Susan, who had a special interest in Russian Realism.

Rather than parse one chapter in a complicated history book, TMORA examines a broad range of work, from the Byzantine and Muscovite eras to the rise and fall of the Soviet Union. Past shows have included porcelain renditions of soldiers, farmers, and sailors state-controlled nesting dolls and a multi-media survey of female mavericks that cut across three nonconformist generations.

It’s calling on Russia “to cease hostilities immediately and withdraw.”

The Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis is expressing its support for Ukraine, with both a statement and new display on its exterior.

The museum, located at 5500 Stevens Avenue South, is the only institution in all of North America dedicated solely to Russian art, and from all periods throughout history. In the days following Vladimir Putin’s violent invasion of Ukraine, the museum has explicitly denounced Russia’s actions.

“The Museum of Russian Art stands with the people of Ukraine and urges Russia to cease hostilities immediately and withdraw,” a statement on its website and social media pages says.

The museum, which is housed in a former church on a busy corner, also put a large blue and yellow display on its exterior, mirroring the Ukrainian flag.

“The Museum of Russian Art promotes understanding of the art, people and culture of Muscovite Russia, the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, its former republics, and post-Soviet Russia through outstanding exhibitions, cultural presentations, and educational programs serving the people of Minnesota and the nation,”a statement on its website says. “The Museum upholds an independent voice and the freedom of expression to carry out its mission unconstrained by influence from foreign governments, political actors and/or corporate or individual interests.”

Restoration Of The Museum Property

All process on the restoration of works of art in the Russian Museum is carried out at the Museum Valuables Restoration Service.

The need to set up a special restoration workshop at the Russian Museum was first raised in 1906. At that time, the artist and restorer A. Boravskiy drew up his famous project to set up a restoration workshop at the Russian Museum. However, owing to a lack of funds, he was not destined to succeed.

It was in 1922 that the restoration workshop of the Russian Museum was established. Its first director was the painter-restorer N.A. Okolovich. The restoration workshop consisted of two sections: the main one, which worked for the Museum, and the regional one, which was engaged in saving cultural monuments in Petrograd and other cities of Russia.

In 1935, the Conservation and Restoration Department was divided into laboratories and sections: painting, new painting, sculpture, applied art and folk art.

During the 1950s and 1960s, new workshops were set up. In 1953, a workshop for graphic arts restoration, in 1954 for Old Russian painting, in 1961 for wooden sculpture, decorative carving and furniture and a workshop for textile restoration, in 1969 for plaster and stone sculpture and 1970 for applied art.

As of 1 January 2019, the Department of Restoration of Museum Estates was transformed into the Service of Restoration of Museum Estates.

A Relief Operation Has Been Initiated By The National Board Of Antiquities The National Museum Of Finland And The National Gallery In Order To Protect Ukraine

As the war between Moscow and Kyiv continues for the 33rd day, the museums in Finland seek to help Ukraine to protect its national treasure from potential damages caused by the Russian offensive. A relief operation has been initiated by the National Board of Antiquities, the National Museum of Finland and the National Gallery in order to protect Ukraine’s national heritage, Yle reported. The decision has been taken as the European museums, including Finland, have received requests for assistance from Ukraine.

Finland has started the efforts to protect the Lviv National Museum and the museum authorities have sent packaging materials like boxes, cardboards to protect the works of art from damage. Elina Anttila, Director General of the National Museum of Finland, attended the remote meeting with the National Museum in Lviv, as per the Yle report. During the meeting, they discussed the efforts that the Finnish museums can make in helping the Ukrainian authorities to protect the places of heritage.
