Pick One Section And Spend Your Entire Visit There

The Met is an encyclopedic museum. Each section has its own department of curators and experts which means whatever section you choose is like visiting a museum within a museum.

Have you been fascinated with ancient Rome ever since you saw Gladiator? Finally, want to see those Monet Water Lillies in real life? Enter the museum through the main entrance, grab the map from the information desk right in the center, and pick the section that most interests you. A couple of focused hours with the mummies will ultimately be more rewarding than trying to take in a bunch of galleries that might not really interest you. Enjoy yourself and don’t turn the experience into the cultural equivalent of eating your broccoli.

How Long Time To Budget For The Met

Metropolitan Museum of Art Hours

Short Answer: 3 hours inside

If you are going to the MET and wondering how long to stay inside you came to the right place. The museum is massive the largest in the US so that should be something to take into consideration. It also has a dense collection of paintings and sculptures. You could easily spend the entire day if not days inside but that really depends on why you are headed to NYC.

As an authorized tour guide, I can tell you from experience that 3 hours tends to be the limit for most people. After that their eyes start to glaze over a bit. Personally, I stick by that same rule. Your mind can only absorb so much beauty at one time! If you are an avid museum goer and really want to spend longer than that, then I highly recommend taking a break every 75 minutes.

A break means having a seat somewhere usually in one of the cafes and letting your mind rest. If you are going in the afternoon then a break means a cocktail!

How To Visit The Metropolitan

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a huge museum. Dont try to see everything, because you will need several days! I recommend that you choose a number of highlights in advance and view them at your leisure. It is also smart to plan your visit early in the day. The Met receives more than six million visitors a year, therefore it is always busy, but in the morning just after opening time, it is relatively quiet.

The Met Museum is located on Museum Mile, a street on the east side of Central Park with several museums together. The Guggenheim is also located here, so if you want to plan a day full of art, you can combine the two museums. The Met also has another location: The Met Cloisters. Along with your ticket for The Met, you also get access to this museum.

  • Camera: Youll see some of the worlds most famous works of art, from ancient times to the Renaissance to modern masters. There are ample opportunities for memorable photos, particularly with interactive exhibitions like the Temple of Dendur. Keep in mind the Met wont let you use selfie sticks, so bring a friend if youre looking to document your trip in portraits.
  • A bottle of water: You cant bring outside food and drink into the museum, but you can bring bottles of water. Youll be spending a lot of time inside, so youll appreciate not having to track down a water fountain.
  • A sketch pad: For the creatively inclined, sitting in one of the galleries and sketching the artwork can be a truly unique way to remember your trip. The Met frowns on materials that can make a mess or potentially harm the artwork , and asks visitors to do their drawing with pencil and paper.
  • Not much else: With the Mets security procedures, you wont be able to bring much else with you. Visitors with backpacks or large bags will be required to check them, although purses are okay to be carried around. Youre better off leaving large items to avoid the long bag check lines.

The Pearls Of The Museum

The Arms and Armor department is particularly popular among visitors of the New York museum. This gallery covers much more geographical areas than the other departments. Here you can observe armors and weapons from Oceania, Egypt, Ancient Rome and Greece, Africa, South and North America, and the Middle East.

In the late 30s of the last century, the Metropolitan Museum of Art was enlarged with the Costume Institute Collection, becoming its separate exhibition gallery. Today this collection has more than 80 thousand accessories and dresses. Unfortunately, the department does not have a permanent exposition due to the delicacy of the exhibits. However, the special thematic shows are held here two times a year, during which the costumes of various epochs are demonstrated. The last shows were dedicated to the works of such great artists as Versace and Chanel, the showings were very successful.

Libraries are among the main treasures of the museum, and one of the major of them is named after Thomas J. Watson. However, many departments have their own libraries, which reflect their themes. In the department of Modern and Contemporary Art, visitors can observe 10 thousand paintings by masters of America and Europe. The pearls of the collection are the works of Picasso, Max Beckmann, J. Johns and Paul Klee.

Check out all and choose the best one for you.
