Savannahs newest art museum opened in 2017, created to showcase the extraordinary collection of African art amassed by local businessman Don Kole.

The collection displayed in a historic home in Savannahs predominantly residential Thomas Square Historic District consists of over 1000 art works from 28 countries in the African continent, together representing 150 different cultures.

The collection ranges from large and impressive sculptures to masks, pottery, military objects and figurines in wood and textiles. Docents provide tours explaining more about the history and significance of the pieces.

Just A Stones Throw Away Is The Owens

One of the nations finest examples of English Regency architecture, the home is filled with details that paint a vivid picture of its residents priorities and provide a rare glimpse into their thinking. In the 1840s, one of Savannahs wealthiest and most prominent families lived here, alongside 13 enslaved men and women and a child whose name we know was Fanny. Across the orderly grounds is one of the oldest and best preserved urban slave quarters in the South, which tells a story of its own. This is truly one of the most compelling historical sites in the country, says Kendall. Here, visitors are challenged to consider history from two very distinct points of view: to imagine the dynamic between nineteenth-century Savannahs most powerful residents and its least, and to better understand the complex narrative of urban slavery by engaging in nuanced thinking about the fabric of the American South.

The Jepson Center houses ArtZeum, an interactive childrens museum space. Its designed with young people in mind, but it challenges young and old alike to rethink their ideas about art. The ArtZeum features 14 activities exploring some big ideas about art: What is it? Why do we make it? How do we look at art? How do we value it?

Normally we dont recommend walking into the art, but the ArtZeum has two stations where you can do just that. Step into a reproduction of the artist Gari Melchers home inspired by his painting The Unpretentious Garden . ArtZeum boasts reproductions of other artworks from the Telfair collection as well, and a wall where you can be the curator and choose which art to display.

Also inside the ArtZeum is a glass wall made just for expressing your creative side. Have an opinion? Tell us which work of art is a must-have if you are moving to the moon. Interested in 3D? Jepson Center For The Arts At Telfair Museum Of Art

Savannah, Georgia, 2006 / Built

Telfair Museum is in the center of the historic city of Savannah, Georgia. Facing historic Telfair Square, the museum was subject to the approval of the Savannah Historic District Board of Review. We consulted with the board, received comments in a public forum and revised the design in response until consensus and nal approval was granted. The building, a contemporary structure that harmonizes with Savannahs urban fabric, respects the traditional grid of the historic district. The height and mass of the museum relate to the surrounding structures. The glazed façade on York Street engages the tree-lined Square and is formed by two white architectural concrete screens framing glass walls, which break up the 120-foot long frontage into bays of less than 60 feet, as required by the Historic Savannah guidelines.
