Rochester Museum And Science Center Comes To Life After Dark

Rochester Museum and Science Center works to reopen for this weekend

RMSC After Dark is a 21+ themed, quarterly event which has gained so much popularity among adults of all ages that they consistently sell out. Lately they have been including the Strasenburgh Planetarium in the agenda, adding star shows and laser light shows to the mix of science, games, crafts, music and dance activities. After Dark usually an indoor & outdoor event in the warmer months, and dinner is available at food trucks parked in the lot.

Get there early! With the regular admission tickets, I recommend getting there a half-hour early just to grab a parking spot, otherwise youre parking on the street blocks away. Another option is to park your car in the lot around 5 PM and walk over to Park Ave. and grab a bite at one of the local restaurants.

Make sure to visit RMSCs website regularly for special showings, science lectures, and members-only events.

Rmsc Cleaning And Sanitation Standards

We have worked diligently to ensure a safe environment for all who come through our doors. We will continue to rely on guidance from the CDC, New York State Department of Health, and Monroe County Health Department to make operational decisions and adjustments as necessary.

Cleaning & Sanitation Standards

  • RMSC custodial staff is on-site before, during, and after the Museum, Nature Center, and Planetarium operating hours to sanitize and clean the restrooms, cafe, common areas, and exhibit galleries.
  • Staff are frequently cleaning and disinfecting commonly touched surfaces and highly interactive and hands-on surfaces.
  • The Star Theater chairs, railings and other high touch areas will be disinfected after every show.
  • Multiple hand sanitizer stations are available throughout the Museum, Planetarium, and Nature Center.
  • Staff and volunteers are required to frequently wash their hands and to not come to work if they are sick or have a fever.

Rochester Museum And Science Center Preschool Closing In May

ROCHESTER, N.Y. A local preschool announced Thursday it will be closing its doors.

For the past 45 years, children ages 3-5 have learned about science at the Rochester Museum and Science Center preschool, through hands-on play. At the end of this school year, the program will shut its doors.

It was a tough decision to make, but school leaders say it was a necessary one.

We really did, during COVID over the past 2 years, do a deep assessment of who we are what we do and what is our core, said RMSC President and CEO Hillary Olson. We recognized that we really need to focus on being the best science and natural history museum, the Strasenburgh Planetarium, and Cummings Nature Center.

The preschool program was a small part of what the museum does, but leaders say they will always take pride in knowing it had a big impact on the more than 4,000 children that went there over the years.

This is really where my education started and I was excited to send my son here as well, said Drew Nye. Not only did Nyes son go to preschool at the Rochester Museum and Science Center, so did he. It gave both of us a great foundation for appreciating the sciences and just getting excited about education, Nye said.

The schools last day open will be May 27th. RMSC plans to work with families to find placements in other preschool programs. Anyone who might have already registered for the 2022-23 school year will be issued a refund.

Visiting The Fantastic Rochester Museum And Science Center

Jim CheneyDisclosure:

When I travel with my family, Im always on the lookout for things to do with my young children. So, when we visited Rochester, New York, I was excited to discover the Rochester Museum and Science Center.

The Rochester Museum and Science Center was formed in 1912 and was initially located in present-day Edgerton Park. Since the 1940s, its been located along East Avenue just southeast of the citys downtown core.

The museum is part Rochester history museum, part science museum, and part childrens museum, which means that theres a whole lot to see here.

The museums main exhibition space is on the first and second floor with the third floor more devoted to fun activities for younger kids.

The first floor of the Rochester Museum and Science Center is largely occupied by Expedition Earth. This area features exhibits covering everything from dinosaurs to how earthquakes occur. And, while the space has a wide breadth of topics, they do a great job blending the subjects together.

What I really liked was that the area featured enough interactive things to do to keep my kids happy while also having signage that offered me the chance to learn more about the different topics and displays.

Even better, the displays were written in a way that most kids should be able to understand the concepts while not being dumbed down for adults. Its a fine line, but the museum does a great job of staying on it.
