Florida International University Patricia And Phillip Frost Art Museum

Helen Venero Artist Lecture Series Ryan Trecartin

The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum serves as the cultural heart of the Florida International University campus and an essential part of Miamis thriving arts community.

The building includes nine galleries , a lecture hall, museum shop and café, art storage and public spaces. It exhibits work from the universitys permanent collection, temporary exhibitions and current educational programs.

The museum footprint and massing are a geometric response to the L-shaped site. Framing the universitys Avenue of the Arts, the building is angled around a lake and preserves a large ficus tree. The solid form of angles and curves is clad in a pink-gray Chinese granite that glistens in the Florida sunlight. A three-story glass atrium forms a transparent gate between the campus and the adjacent lake.

The galleries are grouped in threes, giving curators flexibility in display, lighting and scheduling. In the five galleries with skylights, the museum can exhibit works in UV-filtered daylight. An array of large, custom-designed petals control light levels and colors, preferentially scattering natural light to display walls.

All exhibition spaces, archives, art storage and mechanical equipment are above the ground floor, protected from flooding and able to withstand hurricane-force winds.

I think the best part of working here is the environment. The museum is a super interesting and exciting place to work at. Sometimes management was tough, but the majority of the time they were understanding if you let them know in advance.

Other than management the job itself wasn’t terrible. They claim they’re willing to accommodate your schedule but not exactly the case. I had to leave due to

I was very fortunate to have such a great supervisor. I was given adequate time to complete all my work and got a-lot of experience I was able to partake in many different aspects of the job.

A typical day at work was learning and helping put together upcoming exhibitions in the museum. I learned a lot about art handling and the museum registration processes. I loved being in the galleries doing condition reports and helping hang up works.

It can be argued that the figurative weight of the Miami art world falls squarely on the shoulders of the soon-to-be-constructed Museum Park Complex in downtown Miami. This stunningly-designed Herzog & de Meuron edifice hopes to provide residents with the kind of cultural institution that the city has been deprived of for so long. Although the renovation of the Miami Art Museum will indeed create a landmark venue for art lovers across the city, it is The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum that promises to offer the vast majority of Miamis residents a high-quality cultural experience that hits a little closer to home, both in spirit and location.

Accessibility was obviously a concept that was taken into account during the planning stages of the museum, and it is this difference that will allow it to occupy a unique role. Although many will flock to the museum to wander the impressive gallery space, many more will come to the museum to witness some of the educational programs it will offer including a lecture series that since 1981 has hosted some of the most visionary artists of the twentieth century, including Robert Smith, Susan Sontag, Claus Oldenburg, Frank Stella, Richard Serra and James Rosenquist, among others.

Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum Florida International Universityvisiting Artist Program

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University presents its first visiting artist program featuring Michael Genovese with P.S. . P.S. is a process-focused project, that has taken place in Florida, Texas, California and Illinois, that collects the spirit and attitude of Americans. In this iteration of the project, students are invited to carve their thoughts, views and ideas into blank surfaces placed in social spaces throughout the universitys campuses. These reflections and ruminations capture the essence of the individual, community, and university as a whole. This unedited information, which mirrors a range of perspectives during a time of change, are studied in content, form and function as a starting point for the creation of new work by Genovese.

Surfaces were installed with a provided stylus and subject in social spaces throughout Miami Dade County. The designated areas were installed throughout FIUs campus, The Frost Art Museum, CARTA, Miami Beach, The Gannsevort, Shooters, Hialeah, among others.
