Pacific Groves landmark museum opened in 1883, the same year as the Brooklyn Bridge. While it holds the position of one of the oldest natural history museums in the United States, its collections deep diversity of the Central Coasts flora, fauna, and historical artifacts and stories, its pioneering scientific work, and its interactivity with the community make it as current as ever.

Pacific Grove’s Chinese Fishing Village
This exhibition tells the story of the residents of the Point Alones Chinese Fishing Village. The first to immigrate from China as families, these residents were forced out of their homes in 1906 when their prosperous fishing village was purposefully burned down. Having started one of California’s largest fisheries, the villagers significantly contributed to California’s natural history and economic development. Historic photographs from the Museum’s Collection tell their story.

Monterey County is one of the top five places in North America for bird watching due to its diverse number of resident and migratory birds. The Museum’s Birds of Monterey County exhibition features 291 bird species and 409 life mounted birds. Highlights include a California condor, 117 Rollo Beck life-mounted birds.

She wants to develop the confidence and professionalism of her staff enough that bigger museums turn to PGMNH as a talent pool. What if they end up poaching employees? Its OK. Museums need good people, Bitter says.
She comes from an exhibit designers background. She hopes to lead her team in designing more educational, engaging and accessible exhibits.
The anchor of any natural history museum and its an old-school way of thinking is dead things and plaques. Some people just love, love, love that, Bitter says.
But her goal is to make sure new exhibits go further than a species history and into the future, giving visitors ideas for how to engage. She wants all visitors to walk away with a better sense of the local environment and how we can better protect it.

Native Central Coast Baskets
The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History’s Asking the Baskets exhibit showcases rare and historic California Indian baskets from the Central Coast.
Along with the historic baskets, the exhibit displays native plants collected and processed by contemporary Ohlone basket weaver Linda Yamane. It also shows a short video of her work, collecting and processing basketry plants for weaving a ceremonial basket. The exhibit includes large-scale models of coiling and twining techniques, and a hands-on station for visitors to weave strands in and out of wooden basket spokes.

The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History offers information on everything you could want to know about the natural history of Monterey County, and it’s all free for Monterey County residents! Enjoy our Changes of Monterey exhibit, which highlights our coastal, mountain, and valley habitats and how humans have a role in protecting our environment. See our extensive bird collection, explore our native plant garden, and get up close and personal with the life-size gray whale sculpture, “Sandy,” at the front door. The museum caters to people from all walks of life and we have a little something for everyone.
The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. For non-residents, admission is $8.95 for adults and $5.95 for youth 4-18, students, and military with ID. In addition, we offer free school field trips. What’s The First Thing That A Monarch Does When It Emerges From Its Chrysalis
When ready, the monarch chrysalis splits open along several joints, and the Monarch butterfly carefully emerges. Its wings are still folded and crumpled from confinement in the chrysalis, so the butterfly must pump fluid from its body into the wings, expanding them quickly to full size. The monarch must also assemble its proboscis, a straw-like tongue by which the monarch drinks nectar, which is in two pieces when it first emerges from the chrysalis. A female monarch has approximately 6 weeks to seek out nectar, mate, and lay eggs before she dies.
When Is The Best Time Of Day To See The Monarchs
Monarchs can’t fly when the temperature is below 55 degrees so if you visit in the morning when the temperature is cold, you may not be able to find them. There are many trees in overwintering sites and when clustered high in the trees, monarchs can look like dead leaves and most untrained eyes will be unable to find them.
Museum docents are present everyday in Pacific Grove’s Monarch Sanctuary from Nov to Feb from 12-3 . Our docents significantly enhance your viewing experience with viewing scopes and their ability to answer your questions. When Is The Best Time Of Year To See The Monarchs

You can begin to see monarchs cluster in Central Coast overwintering sites beginning in November. The monarch population peaks in size at the end of November to early December. Monarch mating season is in February around Valentine’s day. The monarchs leave the California Central Coast around late February to the beginning of March.
The Museum’s monarch gallery is open year-round. Highlights of this exhibition include real specimens, amazing videos, vintage artifacts, a “cabinet of curiosities,” and multiple hands-on opportunities–all wrapped in the most up-to-date scientific knowledge and artistic presentation.

Illustrating Nature Exhibit Set At Pg Museum Of Natural History
PACIFIC GROVE The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History presents art in the service of science through an upcoming six-week exhibition titled Illustrating Nature.
To kick off the exhibit that runs through June 14, the museum invites the public to attend a free opening reception on Friday, May 1 5:30 p.m. 7:00 p.m. Each year PGMNH partners with the Science Illustration Program at CSU-Monterey Bay Extended Education. One of the most prestigious programs of its kind in the nation, the Science Illustration Certificate at CSUMB prepares students who are sought after by renowned institutions and publications around the world.
The work of these graduates can be found at museums and science centers such as the Smithsonian Institution, New Yorks American Museum of Natural History, California Science Center and the Los Angeles Museum of Natural History in top science magazines such as National Geographic, Scientific American, American Scientist, Nature, Natural History and Audubon at zoos, aquaria, and botanical gardens such as the National Zoo, Washington, D.C., the Monterey Bay Aquarium Kew Botanical Gardens, U.K. as well as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and hundreds of equally respected organizations.
