Museum Of Science And Technology Accra

The Museum of Science and Technology in Accra was established when two lecturers from the Legon Campus of the University of Ghana, identified a need to create awareness of past and current developments in science and technology in Ghana, and presented a proposal for the development of the institution to Kwame Nkrumah, the then president of Ghana. A short time later, in 1965, the Museum of Science and Technology opened its doors. The institution endeavors to inspire those who visit, particularly its more youthful guests, with a desire to discover more about the sciences and technological development in the world around them.

Exhibits include a human heart and a piece of stone from the moon. The museum incorporates a library, and provides educational activities for children.

Opening hours are 9:00am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.

Possibilities For The Future

It is unlikely that any of the questions raised here will be resolved decisively. Rather, museums will continue to attempt to balance the competing internal tensions inherent in exhibit design. As institutions of learning, museums need to evolve to reflect changes in current scientific practices while being mindful of their histories. In tackling current ethical questions and uncovering fresh ones, here are a few suggestions for possible directions for future exhibits at science and technology museums.

Bramah & Robinson Lighthouse

Lighthouses are beacons that guide mariners through darkness, storms, and hazardous waters. This lighthouse once marked the first landfall for mariners travelling across the Atlantic Ocean. It was part of an extensive network of aids to navigation aids that helped make marine transportation and trade safe and efficient. After standing for 50 years at Cape Race, Canadian officials decided to replace it with a new and taller tower made of concrete. Since lighthouses were expensive to build and Canada had very a long coastline to cover, these officials chose to recycle the iron lighthouse. In 1907, they disassembled and moved the structure to Money Point on Cape North, Nova Scotia, to mark the entrance to the Gulf of St Lawrence. It stood there until 1980, when the government retired it from service and offered it to the Museum.

Canada Science And Technology Museum

On November 17, 2017, the Canada Science and Technology Museum marked a pivotal moment in its history. The museum reopened its doors to the public, starting a fresh chapter following a three-year closure and an $80.5-million renewal of its entire building, which originally opened in 1967.

The new museum features more than 7,400 m² of completely redesigned space, including a temporary exhibition hall to accommodate travelling exhibitions from around the world. Combining everything visitors liked about the previous incarnationlocomotives and the Crazy Kitchenwith more artifacts and interactives that will surely become new favourites, the museum tells Canadas innovation story in an immersive, educational, and fun way.

Visitors are invited to discover, play, and experience how peoplethrough curiosity, observation, and creativityhave made Canada and continue to shape its future. When visitors walk through the museums 11 exhibitions, visit the demonstration stage, or tinker in Exploratek, they will become a part of Canadas story of science, technology, and innovation.

Site Plan And Facilities

There are lots of things to see and do as you explore Canadas story of science, technology, and innovation! See live fire demos and other fun experiments. Stand side-to-side with a locomotive. Imagine living in a tiny house. Surround yourself with the bicycle vortex. See spy cameras, chicken glasses and a nuclear fusion reactor. These are just some of the exciting innovations to explore.

For your health and safety, the following are currently unavailable: the Crazy Kitchen, ZOOOM , Exploratek, access to the locomotive cab, the glacier, prospector’s tent, quiet cube, costumes and some interactive experiences.

Science and technology museums have the power to inspire and educate millions of visitors each year. As mediators between expert scientists and the general public, museums have the responsibility to provide informed and balanced exhibits. Ethics are embedded in museum decisions, from determining what objects to collect to what exhibits to mount and what to say about them. This discussion examines the long history of science and technology museums and raises some of the ethical questions museums face, particularly how an educational mission is defined by the competing tensions of representation, political influence, funding, and entertainment.

The Museum Of The History Of Science Technology And Medicine At The University Of Leeds

To most current students in Leeds, the name Louis Compton Miall would mean very little. A few might recognise the name from the LC Miall Building, home of the Faculty of Biological Sciences. Our team certainly had never heard of him before we were assigned to create an exhibition on magic lanterns and their relationship with the University of Leeds.

While carrying out research for the exhibition Lighting the Way: Leeds and the Magic Lantern, we noticed that Mialls name kept recurring. It soon became clear that Miall and his pioneering work with magic lanterns have long been overlooked. His innovations were not only crucial to the development of magic lanterns, but to teaching more generally. More on Miall later, first a quick history of the lanterns.

First developed in the 1600s by the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens, magic lanterns were an early form of projection equipment, which used a light source and a series of lenses to show images on a much larger scale than ever before. Ethical Questions Of Museum Exhibitions

Museum practitioners are well aware of the ethical dilemmas posed by every acquisition or exhibition. The museum studies literature often raises extended blocks of questions, such as Sharon Macdonald’s introduction to The Politics of Display, a collection of essays addressing ethics in science and technology museums:

Who decides what should be displayed? How are notions of “science” and “objectivity” mobilized to justify particular representations? Who gets to speak in the name of “science,” “the public” or “the nation”? What are the processes, interest groups and negotiations involved in constructing an exhibition? What is ironed out or silenced? And how does the content and style of an exhibition inform public understanding?

The museum community has not reached a reasonable consensus on any of these questions.

The literature in the field has traditionally addressed these questions through case studies, but the analysis of individual museums or exhibitions does not often lead directly to changes in collection and exhibition practices. The difficulty in assessing effective exhibitions and implementing guidelines for future directions is that the ethical dilemmas museums face are a tangled knot of competing interests. Frequently, each new exhibit struggles with the same fundamental questions, hoping to maintain a balance among the diverse tensions of exhibit design.

From Cabinets Of Curiosities To Science And Technology Centers

As showcases for scientific discoveries, technological marvels, and natural wonders, museums became popular across Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. These palaces of the muses began as private collections for acquiring physical knowledge and became displays of individual wealth and power. As explorers brought back new curiosities from around the world, these collections were a systematic attempt to organize the explosion of new knowledge. A complete cabinet of curiosity would have one of everything in the world, organized and displayed in a continuum from the ordinary to the exotic, sometimes even including the imaginary.

Natural history dominated scientific representation in museums for several centuries. From the mid-eighteenth century, collections of ornithology, entomology, paleontology, and geology formed the basis for largepublic museums. Museum Collections Programming And Exhibits

The Canada Science and Technology Museum collects and preserves objects and data relating to scientific and technological history and development in Canada. It also carries out research, and sponsors exhibits and public programs. Major subject areas includepure science ,astronomy, transportation, communication, agriculture,forestry, fishing, extractive industries, industrial technology, energy, aviation and space, marine technology, fire technology, graphic arts technology, medical technology andphotography.
