Inspire: Encouraging Curiosity In The Online Store

Although it became clear that shopping by Chemistry instead of Kids> Science Kits was the wrong move, I still wanted to keep the interactive exhibits as a way to let users be scientists in their own homes. So, I changed the navigation menu to make it more intuitive and moved virtual exhibits to the Science Club.

I was reminded of the mother following her son around the store, trying to see what he liked. I wanted that same experience for the online store. So, parents and kids could sit at the computer together and do these activities. Take for example, the periodic table activity the MSI has. You can mix elements together and see how they react and where that reaction occurs in the real world. Its a great activity for any age. And if Mom finds out Daughter really likes combining elements together and wants to continue to be a chemist at home? She can scroll down and have a chemistry set delivered to their door. So essentially, this is a gift finder wrapped up in a learning tool. But this learning tool was so important for my design principles. It inspires users to explore the natural world and it helps sell products.

Bramah & Robinson Lighthouse

Lighthouses are beacons that guide mariners through darkness, storms, and hazardous waters. This lighthouse once marked the first landfall for mariners travelling across the Atlantic Ocean. It was part of an extensive network of aids to navigation aids that helped make marine transportation and trade safe and efficient. After standing for 50 years at Cape Race, Canadian officials decided to replace it with a new and taller tower made of concrete. Since lighthouses were expensive to build and Canada had very a long coastline to cover, these officials chose to recycle the iron lighthouse. In 1907, they disassembled and moved the structure to Money Point on Cape North, Nova Scotia, to mark the entrance to the Gulf of St Lawrence. It stood there until 1980, when the government retired it from service and offered it to the Museum.

And heres the current online store:

Simply put, compared to the museum website, which is innovative and engaging everything the MSI stands for the online store is an afterthought.

Engage: Galvanizing Science Fans

I also made it clear that the science club was free to join. It was my intent that the member kits would be a gift item, like how zoos and aquariums sell Adopt an Animal kits that people buy for themselves or their kids. People could buy these kits for themselves and become ambassadors, or they could give them as a gift to the kids in their lives who like science.

Finally, I moved the Sponsor a Class feature to the Home page to highlight it.

Chicago Museum of Science and Industry Model Railroad – Presented by CDE Trainz

You will need TRS19 SP2 installed for this route to load. Build of at least 110491

HISTORY:

One of the smallest complete railroad systems, the Museum of Science and Industry’s original model railroad was the largest of its kind in the world when it opened in 1941. Designed by Minton Cronkhite, the railroad covered 2,340 square feet of floor space and was built in Q scale, which paired 1:45 scale trains with 2-rail O gauge track. The various scenes on the model railroad illustrated the role of the railroad within U.S. industry and agriculture throughout the desert southwest. It included 1,000 feet of track and 40 switches operated by an automatic control board.

When it closed in May of 2002, our model railroad had been in service for over six decades, serving as one of the most well-known and beloved exhibits in the Museum. It had seen several enhancements over the years as new technologies helped railroads to operate more safely and efficiently. It was also one of the first railroads in the country to run “diesel” engines as they replaced steam engines.

Today, the Museum’s railroad exhibit, The Great Train Story, once again tells the modern railroad story. The newer layout is 50 percent larger than the original railroad and has the ability to operate more than 30 trains, rather than the original 10.
