The Museum of Natural History is centrally located in Washington, DC on the National Mall. Like all Smithsonian Institution museums, admission is free. Its regular hours are 10 a.m. 5:30 p.m., but hours are extended during the spring and summer with a closing time of 7:30 p.m. The museum is open every day of the year except Dec. 25. Can We Visit Without Prior Reservation

    • Under the New Normal: NO. Again, you need to reserve online at least a day prior to your visit.
    • Before the pandemic: Yes! Walk-ins are encouraged. Just dont go when the museum is nearing its closing time. Although the museum closes at 5 PM, you need to be there at least an hour before closing to see everything and fully appreciate them. Going there 30 minutes prior to closing time is not practical unless you dont mind getting rushed by the announcement that the museum will close in a few minutes.

For big groups, however, like for educational field trips or company tours/excursions, you need to reserve and book slots in advance. Normally, the management doesnt allow field trips and such on weekends. Their schedules generally fall on weekdays.
