London’s Serpentine Galleries Nixes Sackler Name During ‘rebranding Process’

With its company Purdue Pharma, members of the Sackler family produced and pushed the painkiller OxyContin despite knowledge that it contained addictive properties, a pattern detailed in an array of reports, including Patrick Radden Keefes acclaimed 2021 book Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty. Earlier this year, Purdue Pharma was formally dissolved, and the Sackler family agreed to pay billions of dollars to settle legal claims related to the opioid crisis.

The Sackler familys patronage extended far beyond the Met and has also included institutions such as the Tate museum network, the Serpentine Galleries, the Louvre, the Guggenheim Museum, and others. Amid protests led by artist Nan Goldins P.A.I.N. group, which raised awareness within the art world for the Sacklers role in the opioid crisis in the U.S., many museums said they would no longer accept gifts from the familys members in the future.

We did it! Goldin wrote on Twitter, adding, We wait for the other museums who carry their name to follow.

Some have sought legal action that would help institutions free themselves of contracts requiring them to keep the Sackler name on their walls. In March, attorney generals from 23 states lobbied for amendments that could extricate museums from certain contractual duties.

European Sculpture And Decorative Arts

Conserving the Cloisters’ Tapestries

Though European painting may have its own department, other European decorative arts are well-represented at the Met. In fact, the European Sculpture and Decorative Arts collection is one of the largest departments at the Met, holding in excess of 50,000 separate pieces from the 1400s through the early twentieth century. Though the collection is particularly concentrated in Renaissance sculpturemuch of which can be seen in situ surrounded by contemporary furnishings and decorationit also contains comprehensive holdings of furniture, jewelry, glass and ceramic pieces, tapestries, textiles, and timepieces and mathematical instruments. Visitors can enter dozens of completely furnished period rooms, transplanted in their entirety into the Met’s galleries. The collection even includes an entire sixteenth-century patio from the Spanish castle of Vélez Blanco, meticulously reconstructed in a two-story gallery. Sculptural highlights of the sprawling department include Bacchanal, a cast of The Burghers of Calais, and several unique pieces by Houdon, including his Bust of and his famous portrait of his daughter Sabine.

Painting Restored! Is That Really Possible?

These last few weeks have brought urgent attention to longstanding issues of racism in the United States and around the world. Our government, policies, systems, and institutions have all contributed to perpetuating racism and injustice, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art must reflect on its past and aspire to be an agent of change. Over the past weeks we have consulted intensely with many voices, both within and outside the Museum, to shape what it should be. Our list is not exhaustive, but it represents a significant agenda for improvement at this time and in the days and months ahead. Some of these actions are immediate and measurable, while others will take longer to implement, but we are committed to the success of each of them.

Hoe Bezoekt U The Metropolitan

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is een gigantisch museum.
