The Stories Beyond The Memorial

Visitors far and wide have come to see the memorial that rests where two towers once reached great heights. Beyond the memorial itself, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum holds unique memorabilia and artifacts that tell the story of those individuals who lost their lives on that somber day.

Though many of the exhibits within the museum bring about a sense of grief, there are also stories that remind the world of the power tragedy holds in bringing people closer together. The beautiful commemoration to these unique individuals allows visitors to put a story and a photograph to the names. Through each artifact and seemingly ordinary object, you’ll uncover the intimate details that make each item so important in relation to the events that took place either at the North or South World Trade Center Towers, the Pentagon, Flight 11 , Flight 175, Flight 77 and Flight 93.

What Will I See

New 9/11 museum is as beautiful as it is horrific

The 9-11 Memorial & Museum is the site of Ground Zero, where the twin towers of the World Trade Center came crashing down on September 11, 2001. The monumental event forever shaped American history and changed the world as we know it.

Today, the nearly 3,000 lives lost at the World Trade Center, along with the thousands of victims that suffered injuries, is acknowledged at the site, which was concrete and steel rubble for years before it was cleaned up and transformed into a memorial.

Visitors learn about the history of the World Trade Center twin towers, as well as the al-Qaeda coordinated terrorist attacks that orchestrated the September 11 attacks. The memorial commemorates the 2001 attacks as well as the lesser-known 1993 World Trade Center bombing victims.

Your time at the 9-11 Memorial & Museum is both sobering yet enlightening. It tells the story of brave men and women that helped save lives that horrific day. The memorial site includes a tribute to the fallen, feature films, survivor tree, memorial reflecting pools, and surviving artifacts of the towers.

The Historical Exhibition: September 11, 2001 tells the story of 9/11. Its divided in three parts: Events of the Day, where youll learn about the Twin Towers and the attacks to the pentagon and Flight 93, Before 9/11 that talks about the events that led to the attacks, and After 9/11.

The Memorial Exhibition: In Memoriams goal is to honor all the people who lost their lives. Visitors can learn about each victims life by using some touchscreen tables, and youll also find some personal objects that described the victims lives. This part of the museum really helps giving the victims a face, and it makes it more personal.

The temporary exhibitions change every few months. Currently at the time of writing this post, the two exhibitions you can see are Revealed: The Hunt for Bin Laden, an exhibition about the intelligence work that led to finding Osama Bin Laden, and K-9 Courage, that tells the story of the hundreds of dogs that helped after the attacks.

Visiting The 9/11 Museum With Children

If youre wondering if the 9/11 Museum is appropriate for kids, well thats a totally legit question. The museum recommends the historical part of the exhibition only to children over 10 years old, for the emotional impact that the exhibition can have. I mean, its heavy.

When I visited, there were a few older children . I personally feel like children over 10 can learn a lot from visiting the museum, and youll be fine bringing them, but itd be better if you talked to them about the events of 9/11 before visiting the museum, so it wont be shocking for them. Here youll find some tips from the museum on how to talk to kids about terrorism and 9/11.

If you download the Explore 9/11 app, youll find on there a specific childrens tour, where the events are narrated from another child in very simple and appropriate terms.

The museum also features some activity stations for children, where kids can play and learn from the educators at the same time. Activity stations are offered every Saturday during the school year. They take place in the Museum Education Center from 10 AM to 12:30 PM and 1:30 to 4 PM.

You can also book a 2-hour, kid-friendly workshop where kids will go through the exhibitions and learn in an interactive and non-shocking way about the events of 9/11. This activity is affordable and loved by kids, so a very good choice if youre visiting the museum with children.
