The memorial is completely free, but you must pay to visit the museum. Currently, tickets range from $15-$24. However, you can get free admission to the museum every Tuesday evening from 5 p.m. to two hours prior to closing with ticket distribution beginning at 4 p.m. Limited quantities of these tickets are available, and no more than four tickets are allowed per person. Free admission is always granted to family members of 9/11 victims, first responders, and recovery workers.

The Memorial and the Museum are located at 180 Greenwich Street in lower Manhattan. You can easily use Uber to get here if you prefer, but the best option in my opinion is using the subway its cheaper, most sustainable, and in most cases faster.

You can take the A, C, 1, 2, or 3 trains and get off at Chambers Street, or the A, C, J, Z, 2, 3, 4, or 5 trains to Fulton Street, or the E train straight to the World Trade Center.

How To Get To The 9/11 Memorial & Museum

Once in the city, youll need to determine how youll get to the museum. If youre staying in the city for a few days, see which subway line is closest to the hotel. During my visit, I took the 5 train from Grand Central Terminal to the Fulton Street Station and walked the rest of the way to the museum.

While you can hail a taxi or a ride-sharing service such as Uber, itll be far more expensive than taking the subway. Using the subway is super easy and affordable!

If youre staying in Lower Manhattan, walking may be your most advantageous mode of transportation to the museum.

A neighborhood that was once called Little Syria, a center of Christian Arab immigrant life in the United States beginning in the 1880s, once existed just south of the site of the World Trade Center. The cornerstone of St. Joseph’s Lebanese was found under the rubble, next to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at 157 Cedar Street. Both congregations were founded by Christians who had fled Ottoman oppression in the Middle East. Activists lobbied for the Museum to include a permanent exhibit about the neighborhood to “help the thousands of tourists who visit the site to understand that immigrants from Ottoman lands have played a patriotic role in the country’s history,” arguing that it was important to memorialize the multiethnic character of “Little Syria.” The old Christian Syrian neighborhood was demolished in the 1940s due to the construction of the BrooklynBattery Tunnel.

Families visiting New York City often want to bring their kids to the museum. However, it may not be suitable for all children and families. Prior to purchasing your 9/11 Memorial Museum tickets, determine if your children will be able to handle the museums content, exhibits, and nature.

While the museum is not recommended for visitors under the age of 10, Id increase the age to 12. With so much information to take in, it can be frightening and overwhelming for children, especially those with limited information about the tragedy. And while no gore or graphic images are explicitly shown, the exhibits do not sugar coat the events.

If possible, speak to your kids about the 9/11 attacks in NYC prior to your visit. Gauge what theyve learned in school and answer any of their questions truthfully and honestly. If you do believe your children are mature enough to experience the museum, also be prepared to answer their questions throughout your museum visit.

Also, keep in mind the museum is somber and quiet the entire time. Younger children who cannot handle a 2+ hour visit to a silent museum will not do well inside the 9/11 Museum. It may also be in your best interest to have a conversation with your kids about expected and appropriate museum behavior prior to entering the museum.
