Frida Museum In Mexico City

Museo Frida Kahlo Tickets Lines And Audio Guides

A magical mystery tour of artist Frida Kahlo’s home in Mexico City

The museum opened at 10 a.m. on a Sunday and we arrived at 9:45 a.m. to get into an already growing line. There were two lines. On the left is the line for people with tickets and the right is the line for people without tickets. We had bought our 10:30 a.m. entrance tickets online in advance, which is highly recommended unless you want to wait in the ticket-less line for at least two hours. The ticket-less line works as standby, letting people through based on how many who have already bought tickets show up. We saw plenty of people show up, figure out they were out of luck, and leave.

Tickets are $235.40 pesos and you can purchase one for a specific day and time two months in advance. I couldnt get a credit card to work on their website but a debit card worked fine. Be sure to bring a print out of your ticket.

If you want to take photos with any type of camera inside, youll pay $30 pesos at the entrance and theyll give you a special sticker.

They also have audio guides for $75 pesos available at the entrance. They have detailed panels in English and Spanish throughout the museum that gave plenty of information. The audio guide would have provided even more details but I learned a lot at the museum without it.

Museo Frida Kahlo: La Casa Azul

The Frida Kahlo Museum is the first stop of this 3-museum tour package in Mexico City. Aside from the Casa Azul, which was Frida and Diegos home, you will also get to visit the Diego Rivera Anahuacalli Museum. Another important art museum in the city is the Dolores Olmedo Museum which will be the last stop for the tour.

You should understand by now that Casa Azul was built by Fridas father Wilhelm Kahlo as their familys residence. So, when it was turned into a museum, it couldnt hold as many paintings as they would have liked Of course, several of her important artworks like Viva la Vida, Frida y su Cesárea and Portrait of my father Wilhelm Kahlo can be seen here, but if you want more Frida artwork and insight into her life, youll need to visit some more museums.

For one, the Anahuacalli Museum houses Diego Riveras collection of pre-Hispanic folk art of more than 50,000 pieces. Diego Rivera himself conceptualized and designed the architecture of this building.

This was made with volcanic stone with a seemingly unique design for a structure that Rivera and Kahlo deemed fit for the Mexican art to be displayed.

Finally, the Dolores Olmedo Museum is a museum which was previously the property of businesswoman Dolores Olmedo who had an extensive collection of art from pre-Hispanic folk art to colonial to modern and contemporary art, and pre-Hispanic art equal to more than 6,000 pieces.

After Frida Kahlo Museum Go To Xochimilco And/or Anahuacalli

After visiting Casa Azul, take a short walk to the center of Coyoacan and get lunch. There are a number of restaurants a few blocks away from the Frida Kahlo museum in Coyocan by Parque Centenario . Ive eaten at both La Cerveceria de Barrio and Antiguo Palacio De Coyoacan and they were both tasty.

If you have more adventure in you, grab your food to go, head down to Xochimilco and have a party on the canals.

Kahlo museum ticket gets you into Museo Diego Rivera Anahuacalli. You can use your Anahuacalli ticket for one year after the purchase of a Museo Kahlo ticket.

Visiting both Xochimilco and Anahuacalli after going to Casa Azul is a great idea because of how far south from Mexico City you have to go to get to them. It makes the most sense to get these three knocked out in one day if you can.

And thats how to spend an amazing day in Coyoacan and how to maximize your time is the Frida Kahlo Museum.

Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo

While Frida Kahlos Casa Azul may be her most visited abode, she also resided and worked at another Casa Azul, her blue-painted house which she shared with her husband Diego Rivera. In the airy, architecturally stunning spaces of the museum, many pieces of Rivera and Kahlos art are on display, including a collection of Riveras papier-mâché cartonería figures of humans, skeletons, and animals, all assembled in the studio where he first constructed them.

You can feel completely free in Mexico City, as long as you remain watchful and stay in the touristic areas. The crime statistics show that crime is possible and frequent in Mexico City, but tourists are rarely targeted. Pay attention when approached by some people, since they might be thieves trying to rob you.

Where To Buy Frida Kahlo Museum Tickets

I purchased the tickets online because the tickets sold at the ticket booth in the museum itself are limited. Meaning, if you go there without a ticket reservation, there is a 95% chance that you wont get in.

The line at the Frida Kahlo Museum is ridiculously long. When facing La Casa Azul, you will see 2 lines: the left side is for people who are waiting and the right for those who have reservations either from tour agencies or third-party ticket sellers.

Frida Kahlo In Coyoacan

In Fridas time, Coyoacan was a neighborhood in the outskirts of Mexico City. The city was considered to be held only in downtown and a few surrounding areas, but as years passed by the city grew on its sides and Coyoacan became part of it. This picturesque neighborhood keeps its essence, with large colonial houses, a colorful market with traditional food and crafts, and parks to sit and enjoy some quality coffee, churros, ice creams, and other street food. Its a must-visit, walking around and enjoying the city.

If you visit Mexico City, this is one of the unmissable spots. So book your tickets ahead and enjoy your tour!

Palacio De Bellas Artes

Frida Kahlo Museum Exterior, Mexico City by Uwe Duerr on 500px

This place, aptly named, is beautiful just to look at. If you like architecture or gorgeous places, you want to make this stop. I went there to see the Diego Rivera murals they have. Thats the darned thing about muralsyou cant move them, so a trip to Mexico was necessary.

I grew up in Detroit, where, at the Detroit Institute of Arts, we have the spectacular Diego Rivera Industry Murals that he painted about the automobile industry. Theyre one of, if not my very favorite thing in Detroit . I once wrote my Spanish final exam essay project about Rivera in college. Thats when I became obsessed with his wife a little lady named Frida Kahlo.

So, my trip to Mexico has been a long time coming. On Sunday the museum has free entry, but what they dont have are English-speaking staff. So finding the murals, despite their massive size, took some searching. The palace is, as you might expect, massive. Lucky for me, the only section they allowed visitors to see were the murals.

But, under a glowing glass-filled atrium, there are several Rivera murals on display in the center of the palace. If youre familiar with his work at all, theyre immediately familiar, rich, colorful and filled with secret and not-so-secret meaning and symbolism. Mostly he threw shots at the politicians and policies of his time. Some of his murals no longer exist for this reason.

Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera Y Frida Kahlo

Rather than live together under the same roof, Kahlo and Rivera opted to reside in separate homes adjoined by a skywalk. Today, those homes and studios serve as Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo in Mexico Citys San Ángel neighborhood. Juan O’Gorman, an architect and friend of Riveras, designed the homes . The buildings were considered avant-garde at the time, as they veered from the traditional Mexican architecture popular back then.

The compound is predominately dedicated to the works of Rivera and includes a sampling of the hundreds of paintings he created while living there along with the original glass bottles of paint pigments, brushes and easels that he used. But there are traces of Kahlo there, too, and guests can explore the very rooms where she once lived and worked.

Frida Kahlo Museum History

Born in 1907 in La Casa Azul in Mexico City, Frida is considered one of Mexicos greatest artists. The blue house was built by his father Guillermo Kahlo in 1904 and this is where Frida grew up and died.

During the Mexican Revolution, the Kahlo family was financially challenged and they were not able to pay the mortgage, including Fridas medical care.

This is when Fridas husband, Diego Rivera came into the picture. He purchased the home which paid off the mortgage and debt that Fridas father accumulated, both in building the house and paying for Fridas accident.

At age 6, Frida contracted polio which crippled her right leg. It grew shorter than her left leg which made her limp.

When Frida was 18, the bus she was riding collided with a trolley car which made her paralyzed for most of her life.

As she experienced poor health at a very young age, Fridas revolutionary work inspired many of us today that ones life should not stop because of these pains.

Frida continued to live the life she always imagined by doing what she loved most: art. Little did she know that one day, she will be a big icon not just in Mexico but all over the world.

Plus: four more Kahlo stops

Coyoacán was once a hard-to-pronounce place, little known outside of Mexico City. Now it is an almost-obligatory destination for most visitors. Blame it on Frida Kahlo-mania. The artists birthplace and final residence, now the Museo Casa Azul, is here on a quiet residential street between similar still-private homes built around the turn of the 20th century. The folk art-filled museum, open as such since 1957, now draws queues that snake around the tree-lined block . But this was not always the case.

On my first visit to this vast capital in 1978 as a student of art history, I wanted to visit the then little-known artists house. My guidebook didnt mention it and my hotel concierge didnt know of it nor did the several taxi drivers I queried to help me find it. On that occasion I didnt get there. And when I finally did, several years later, it was dusty and forgotten I was the only visitor that day.

A short walk from the Casa Azul is the home where Leon Trotsky lived and was killed with an ice-pick. The house has been preserved in detail: Trotskys bathrobe still hangs on the hook where he left it. Its the areas other big draw.
