CHICAGO – Chicago‘s main museums are once again requiring masks for all visitors over the age of 2 regardless of whether they are vaccinated.

The Shedd Aquarium started requiring guests to wear masks on July 31. The Field Museum started requiring everyone in the building over the age of 2 to wear masks starting on August 2. The Art Institute of Chicago is also requiring masks.

While those are the main museums visitors think of when they think of Chicago, other museums are also requiring masks:

• The National Museum of Mexican Art has required masks since it reopened on July 1.
• The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago requires masks.
• The Chinese American Museum requires all visitors to wear masks regardless of vaccination status.
• The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture requires masks for people who are not vaccinated.
• The Polish Museum of America has required masks since it reopened on May 29.
• The National Hellenic Museum has not yet reopened it is scheduled to open again in September.
• The Heritage Museum of Asian Art remains closed with no date for reopening.

Is There A Dolphin Show

Unfortunately there is no dolphin show, however, the aquarium does offer a chance to meet face to face with the beluga whales. The aquarium has a program where you can partner with a trainer and actually enter the water standing chest deep and play with the beluga whales. The cost for this experience is $200

There is also a shark feeding tour that you can take part in. See how the sharks and rays respond to a ringing dinner bell. The cost for the feeding for adults is $94.45, children ages 10-11 $84.95 and members $50.00

How The Chicago Citypass Works

The Chicago CityPASS, as noted above, is a booklet of tickets. Once you receive the booklet, you simply present it at the designated admission line at each attraction .

The attraction will tear out the relevant ticket and let you in. Thats it! All you need to do is hold onto your ticket booklet and make sure you dont lose it. You have nine full days once you visit the first attraction to visit the other four. And, the booklet also comes with discounts to the either/or attractions so you can choose one and still save money on the other.

You can purchase the ticket booklet directly from CityPASS or at any of the participating attractions. Just walk up to the admission counter and ask to purchase the Chicago CityPASS.

Art Institute Of Chicago

The Art Institute of Chicago offers select free admission days for Illinois residents throughout the year.

To receive free admission tickets, Illinois residents must reserve them online in advance.

The museum is always free for Chicago teens under the age of 18, all children under age 14, Link and WIC cardholders, active-duty military, and Illinois educators.

How To Reach Field Museum

The Field Museum is in the middle of Chicagos Museum Campus, at 1400 South Lake Shore Drive.

The Museum Campus houses the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium, three of Chicagos most popular attractions.

Chicago Transit Authority has convenient public transport options, which we think is the best way to reach the Field Museum.

Where To Eat At The Shedd

You will probably spend several hours at the Aquarium to see everything and will need to eat either lunch or a snack. You have three options at the Shedd Aquarium restaurants or you can pack your own lunch.

Bubble Net This cafeteria-style restaurant offers a variety of food to please everyone. It does get very busy at lunchtimes and when a Dolphin show or 4D movie lets out. I would suggest trying to time your stop for lunch when a show is going on to reduce the number of people eating. The seating overlooks the lakefront so kids can watch the boats go by while they eat.

The Bubble Net

Tip: The best value is ordering the whole pizza deal with four drinks. Easily feeds a family.

Deep Ocean Café Located in the lower level at the Polar Play Zone, it has quick snacks like pretzels, popcorn, and hot dogs. They also have picnic tables located across from the dolphins which makes for a great show while you eat

The Deep Ocean CafeSoundings Café This café offers wraps, fresh salads, and burgers. It tends to be a little less crowded and quieter than the Bubble Net. It also has windows that overlook the lakefront.

If the weather is nice, you can find picnic tables outside on the North Terrace Lakeside Lawn. You are able to leave and come back inside if you keep your ticket.

Visiting The Field Museum

We approached the Field Museum at the North Entrance, entering through the majestic column. Inside we quickly queued and were through in a matter of minutes. A coat and bag check is available near the museum store at the South Entrance. The museum is large and the small per item charge is well worth the cost.

The best plan of attack is to decide what you really want to see. In my family we each chose our number one must see everything else just happens as we come across it. It is probably best to realize that you wonât be able to see everything the museum has to offer in one visit.

Doug chose Inside Ancient Egypt. Entering the pyramid on the main level, you make your way through its chambers down to ground level. Filled with mummies, sarcophagus, and treasures it is an intriguing introduction to Egypt.

I chose the Hall of Gems, a magnificent room filled with brilliant, priceless jewels. It was interesting to see how gems are created and how even the smallest variable will create something different. Of course the cut stones and dramatic jewelry were beyond belief.

Brenna and Caelan, quite unanimously, chose the Play Lab. The Play Lab is hands on science and pure fun.

We probably saw half of what the Field Museum had to offer in the 4 hours we were there. We explored a deserted island in the Pacific, saw the Lions of Tsavo, toured China and learned about our evolving planet.

History Of The Shedd Aquarium

The Shedd Aquarium was opened on May 30, 1930. It was a gift to the city of Chicago from retail leader John G. Shedd, a protégé of Marshall Field, a benefactor of the nearby Field Museum. Mr. Shedd never saw the aquarium during his lifetime, having passed away after only seeing the architects first drawings of Shedd Aquarium. However, his widow, Mary Shedd, cut the ribbon at Shedd Aquariums official opening ceremony.

Field Museum Highlights Tour

This one-hour tour starts at 11 am daily, excepton Thursdays when it begins at 2 pm.

On this guided tour you will be taken through the highlights of this Museum including but not limited to Sue the T-Rex, man-eating lions of Tsavo, Egyptian mummies, etc.
