The SF Asian Art Museum is one of several San Francisco museums that offers free admission days once a month. Their free days are supported by Target and are the first Sunday of each month.
Free admission on these days include access to their permanent collection. There is still a charge to see some of their temporary exhibits.

Discount Passes That Include The Sf Asian Art Museum
You can also save money on admission through one of SF’s discount passes. These passes include admission to numerous museums and attractions around San Francisco. You can often save 40 to 50% vs. the cost of purchasing the tickets individually.

Go City: The Go City is a discount pass. It’s a popular option. You have the choice to select the pass that is right for you based on the number of days you plan to use it. You can buy a 1, 2, 3-or 5-day pass. Gifts For Hosting And Cooking
With the exhibition schedule a bit different from years past, as the Asian Art Museum undergoes a major expansion project, Director of Retail Françoise Sengens decided the organizing principle of this years winter display would bequite simplyfood.
Whatever your holidays are, there is always a big meal that people share with family and friends. So I investigated artisans and small companies, mostly Asian American, in San Francisco and the Bay Area, she says. We decided to bring in a lot of products, gourmet food and gifts for hosting and cooking.
The centerpiece of the store is a display of Jade Chocolates , a San Francisco-based company that makes artisan chocolates blended with teas, spices and tropical fruitsall flavors from Asia and the Pacific Islands.
But Sengens also recommends a range of tasty treats made by Oakland-based food company Yumé Boshi . Their small-batch Japanese preserves are made using traditional methods, and simple, locally sourced ingredients. Look for their plum syrup , jars of Japanese salty plums and a mandarinquat and ume plum marmalade.
Third Floor Of This Sf Museum
The best flow for your museum visit is by heading up to the third or top floor. Once you exit the escalator, head into the door on the right.
The first exhibit you will view is the South Asia Exhibit. This is where you will see several works of art from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Here is a photo from one of the six rooms that showcases this exhibit.
After you finish in these rooms, you’ll see a small room off to the left featuring artifacts from Iran and the surrounding countries. This exhibit is called The Persian World and West Asia.
The next set of rooms is dedicated to Southeast Asia. The four rooms of this gallery include items from Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Burma, Laos, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Here is just a sample of what you will see here.
You will then enter a small exhibit on The Himalayas and the Tibetan Buddhist World. From there, you’ll enter the largest exhibit which includes hundreds of pieces from China.
The first room you enter is one of my favorites. It includes several small, yet intricate statues carved out of jade. It’s officially known as the Chinese Jade Gallery.
There are three more rooms on the third floor showcasing larger statues from China.
Once you finish in the room shown above – continue down the hall and you will find a set of stairs. Take these stairs down to the second level. This is where you will find three additional rooms featuring more ancient artifacts from China.

Second Floor Of The Sf Asian Art Museum
The second to last room in the China exhibit is another one of my favorites. It shows you the intricacies of the written Chinese language.
After you finish the exhibit on China, you will see three rooms with art from Korea. Some of the first pieces date back to 1392.
The next, and final, area is dedicated to art from Japan. Here you will see pieces depicting early Japanese life as well as porcelain, prints and tea related art.
Once you complete this exhibit, head out the doors and take the escalator back to the first floor.
Fun Fact: Which exhibit houses the oldest works of art? The China exhibit showcases pieces that are from around 221 BC.

When Is The Best Time To Visit
The best time to visit the SF Asian Art Museum is during the week. I like to arrive first thing when they open, which is usually when they aren’t very busy. It’s nice to walk through the museum with few others around. However, this museum is quite large and there is usually plenty of space for everyone to spread out yet still admire all of their interesting pieces.

Great Museum Best Part Is Free Cafe And Gift Shop
Of course, this museum has wonderful Asian Art, and we view it often. But our favorite thing to do is to tell the front desk we just want to go to the cafe and gift shop. We love both of them. The cafe has a wonderful and ever-changing array of Asian foods and teas, and our house has a number gift shop purchases as decorations.

The new home of the Asia Art museum is worth visiting for both the art and terrific adaption of the building. If you like Chinese bronzes, this is one of the best collections in America.
Friendly and for anyone who is not too sophisticated, a good children’s museum. The Japanese section is inadequate given the donations they have received. The Indian curator was outstanding not only in knowledge but in sincerity and passion. If you’ve seen other selections in NYC or LA or Chicago, not worth visiting. The museum store is quite good.
Very beautiful displays, could have more, free Sunday entries once a month, take the BART train since limited parking, near Davies Symphony Hall, City Hall, SF Main Library.
After you have seemingly done everything else in SF, go to the Asian Art Museum near the Civic Center. This is an amazingly well-done collection that could easily take up several hours of your day. We were pleasantly surprised by the entire collection.

From Rare Royal Commissions to Contemporary Works by Ground-breaking Artists, Likeness and Legacy in Korean Portraiture Examines Koreas Past and Present
June 24, 2021, San Francisco Drawing a line from centuries of Confucian tradition to todays selfie-culture, Likeness and Legacy in Korean Portraiture presents exquisite traditional draft and finished paintings alongside innovative sculptures, mixed media, and paintings from recent decades. Likeness and Legacy is exclusively at the Asian Art Museum from Aug. 27 to Nov. 29, 2021.
What makes Likeness and Legacy unique is that we move beyond a specific moment in time to pair the traditional draft paintings with a selection of finished portraits on silk as well as contemporary approaches to portraiture by Korean and Korean American artists, explains Hyonjeong Kim Han, Associate Curator of Korean Art at the Asian Art Museum. This allows visitors to understand how the role of portraiture has evolved in establishing identity and legacy, and to see how portraits navigate the shifting boundaries between the individual and the collective, especially in the larger context of Korean culture and recent history.
When completed, one copy of the painting was kept at a court while other copies were sent to the officials families. They were taken out for royal ceremonies or family rituals focusing on the Confucian practice of ancestor worship.

Black Is Beautiful In Past And Present Publications
When the Museum of the African Diaspora opens Black is Beautiful on Dec. 4, an exhibition of Kwame Brathewaites photography, Visitor Experience Manager Nia McAllister thinks youre going to want to bring part of the show home with you.
This key figure in the second Harlem Renaissance co-founded the African Jazz Arts Society Studios and Grandassa Models, a modeling agency for black women. His powerful images of black men and women with natural hair and clothes celebrating their African roots illustrated the movement that gives the show its name. A catalog featuring all of the above can be found in MoADs small but mighty museum store.
If youre looking for something a bit more rooted in Bay Area artistic production, McAllister has that covered too. Something we try to feature in the bookstore at MoAD is local black artists and black creatives, she says, suggesting an Oakland-based publication called Umber Magazine.
Its collectively owned by three people of color and it features the visual arts and culture of black and brown people, McAllister explains. The museum stocks both the magazines luxurious Sound Issue and their latest zine, an eight-page large-format publication Umber describes as a visual tactile mixtape .

First Floor Of The Museum
I recommend that you start your visit on the first floor of the SF Asian Art Museum. This is where they house the majority of the traveling exhibits.
After you enter, head to your left. You should see signs that direct you to the door where the special exhibit is located.
Many of these exhibits do not allow photography, so make sure you ask before taking any pictures in this area.
After you view the exhibit or exhibits in this area, head to the other side of the gift shop. Here is where you’ll find the escalator. Take it to the very top.

An Introduction To Electronic Music
Camille Verboort, a buyer for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art store, spotted her recommendation earlier this year at a toy fair. I saw this product, and it stopped me in my tracks, she remembers. The Blipblox is a synthesizer for children ages three and up, a technically complicated but easy-to-use instrument that kids can experiment with and grow into, eventually plugging into computers to create their own recorded music.
Made by the Potrero Hill-based company Playtime Engineering, Verboort saw in the Blipblox not just a fun and educational product, but something that expanded on the museums holdings, specifically Brian Enos ambient music installations. Part of my job is to bring in products that relate to our collection and the exhibitions we have, to further educate people about the artists we feature in the museum, Verboort explains.
The Blipblox, along with a selection of other noise-making art-related toys, are available in SFMOMAs store in what Verboort calls the family jam band section.

The Charles M. Schulz Museum offers a wide variety of novelty items, such as cartooning books, “Peanuts” collections, posters and clothing.
