How to Get FREE Tickets to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture

Beginning Tuesday, the Smithsonian Institution will no longer require visitors to reserve timed-entry passes at any of itsD.C.-area museums, with the exception of the National Museum of African American History and Culture which used a ticket system before the pandemic and the National Zoo. At the same time, the Smithsonian facilities that have already reopened in the organizations phased reopening plan also will begin admitting visitors at full capacity. Those located on the National Mall will return to pre-pandemic hours on the days of the week they are open. Vaccinated guests and those younger than 2 are not required to wear masks all others must still wear face coverings.

The two most recent museums to reopen the National Museum of African Art and the Freer Gallery of Art will have no timed-entry-passes or capacity restrictions as of opening day, July 16. The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery remains closed for renovation.

Overall, the Smithsonian has had a more cautious approach to reopening its museums than some other cultural institutions in the area. By eliminating most timed-entry passes and pandemic capacity restrictions, it is taking a significant step toward normalcy and ending a policy that sometimes required museumgoers to plan visits weeks in advance, because tickets often snatched up quickly.

African American History Museum Tickets

According to website no tickets were available. When I rode by the museum on the bus around 9:30am there was a line of about 30 people.

I just dropped by around 1pm to see if I could get in. There was no line and I got right in. So my advice is if you want to see this museum, drop by and chances are good you will get in. Your odds may be better on weekday afternoons but anything is possible.

You can probably get in for the afternoon just walking up to the museum.

It wasn’t crowded anywhere in the museum. Maybe October is slow time of year. I would guess 50% of people who request tickets don’t show up.

Have other people just dropped by without tickets and gone in?

The cost for 6 shrimp and grits was $18.40 plus tax. I didn’t eat there!

I am not there…so please tell us what is to the far left on the wall. And why do they post exorbitant prices on the food line?
